RAWLS

THEORY
OF
JUSTICE
INTRODUCTION
John Rawls was an American
political philosopher in the
liberal tradition. His theory of
justice as fairness describes a
society of free citizens
holding equal basic rights and
cooperating within an
egalitarian economic system.
INTRODUCTION
Rawls’ theory is oriented toward liberalism and forms the

THEORY OF
JUSTICE
John Rawls wrote a book called "A Theory of Justice" in 1971.
He wanted to solve the problem of how to balance freedom and
equality in society. Instead of seeing them as opposites, Rawls said we
could make them work together. He called this idea "justice as
fairness." Rawls believed that by thinking differently about what
fairness means, we could see that freedom and equality aren't in
conflict after all. He wanted to show that we could have both in a fair
society.

CONCLUSION
John Rawls gives account of a system which benefits all sections of the
society, equally. He, through his theory, proposed a system where laws and
principles of justice are made by the conscious effort of the people who would
be governed by those laws and principles. His idea of the veil of ignorance
points out to the idea of equality, a system where each individual has equal
participation in the making and where there are no biases involved. Further,
through his difference principle, he had taken care of those who need special
attention after the system is made. His idea is one such ideal which can be
chosen to protect the rights of minorities and the least well off.
