An Act to provide for the termination of certain pregnancies by

MTP Act was established in
1971 and two amendments are made in: In 1994 In 2002 In 2021 1971 Vs 2021 OBJECTIVE To improve the maternal health scenario by preventing large number of unsafe abortions.
Legalizes abortion services.
Promotes access to safe abortion services to women.
Offers protection to medical practitioners.
When can pregnancies be terminated?
• Up to 20 weeks gestation.
• With the consent of the women, If the women is
below 18 years or is mentally ill, then with consent of a guardian.
• With the opinion of a registered medical practitioner,
formed in good faith, under certain circumstances. Place for conducting MTP

Government or A place approved for the purpose of this Act by a District-level Committee constituted by the government with the CMHO as Chairperson SIGNIFICANCE
The new law will contribute towards
ending preventable maternal mortality to help meet the Sustainable Development Goals. The amendments will increase the ambit and access of women to safe abortion services and will ensure dignity, autonomy, confidentiality and justice for women who need to terminate pregnancy. THANK YOU
