IMPORTANCE OF FIRE SAFETY

•Hospitals is equipped with large electrical equipments

•Hospitals contain ample oxygen supplies, volatile chemicals and other drugs that can
spread fires and emit deadly fumes into the air.

•Patients will have their mobility impaired by illness, disability or treatment.

•Patients are at their most vulnerable during and after operations.

•Patients in high dependency and ICU units are critically ill.

Causes of fire in a hospital:
Following are the most frequent causes of fire:

● Smoking/ Carelessness of contractors/ workers hospital staff/ visitors

● Defective electrical equipment & wiring

● Overcrowding of electrical equipment with use of extension plugs

● Medical gas and vacuum system/ Gas cylinder

● HVAC fire hazard

● Kitchen

● Laboratory

RACE PROTOCOL

Rescue – Assist anyone who needs immediate help to evacuate the


fire if you can do so safely.

Alarm – Once you are out of immediate harm, sound the fire alarm to
notify firefighters to the fire.

Confine – If possible, confine the flames by closing windows and


doors to prevent the spread of the fire, electrical mains off, gas shut
off.

Extinguish/Evacuate – Attempt to extinguish the fire yourself if


possible before firefighters arrive using the fire extinguishers. If the
fire is too big to extinguish safely, focus on evacuating yourself and
others.
