TSUNAMI!

WHAT IS TSUNAMI?
ACCORDING TO NATIONALGEOGRAPHIC.COM A
TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF OCEAN WAVES THAT
SENDS SURGES OF WATER, SOMETIMES REACHING
HEIGHTS OF OVER 100 FEET (30.5 METERS), ONTO
LAND. THESE WALLS OF WATER CAN CAUSE
WIDESPREAD DESTRUCTION WHEN THEY CRASH
ASHORE.
A TSUNAMI IS USUALLY COMPOSED OF A
SERIES OF WAVES, CALLED A WAVE TRAIN,
SO ITS DESTRUCTIVE FORCE MAY BE
COMPOUNDED AS SUCCESSIVE WAVES
REACH SHORE.
IMPACT OF TSUNAMI
1. Loss of Life: One of the most
devastating impacts of a tsunami is the
loss of life, as the powerful waves can
sweep away people and cause drowning.
2. Injuries: Tsunamis can cause injuries
ranging from minor cuts and bruises to more
serious injuries such as broken bones, head
trauma, and internal injuries.
3. Property Damage: Tsunamis can destroy
buildings, infrastructure, and coastal facilities
such as homes, businesses, roads, bridges,
and ports. The force of the waves and the
debris they carry can lead to extensive
structural damage.
4. Displacement of People: Many people
may be displaced from their homes and
communities due to tsunami damage, leading
to temporary or long-term displacement and
challenges in finding shelter and support.
5. Economic Impact: The destruction of
infrastructure, businesses, and livelihoods
can have a significant economic impact on
affected areas, leading to loss of income,
decreased economic activity, and increased
recovery costs.
6. Environmental Damage: Tsunamis can
cause environmental damage such as erosion
of coastlines, destruction of ecosystems,
contamination of water sources with debris and
pollutants, and disruption of marine life.
7. Disruption of Services: Services such as
electricity, water supply, communication
networks, and transportation systems can be
disrupted or completely destroyed by a
tsunami, affecting access to essential services
and hindering rescue and recovery efforts.
8. Psychological Impact: Survivors of
tsunamis may experience psychological
trauma, including post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and
grief due to the loss of loved ones and
property.
9. Health Risks: Tsunamis can pose health
risks such as waterborne diseases from
contaminated water, injuries from debris, and
mental health challenges due to the trauma of
the event.
10. Long-Term Recovery: Recovery from a
tsunami can be a long and challenging
process, requiring efforts to rebuild
infrastructure, restore services, support
affected communities, and implement
measures to reduce future vuln
