BADJAOS
• The Badjao tribe consists of nomadic seafaring individuals.
• The Badjao are skilled divers who specialize in searching for pearls.
• However, the Badjao people were compelled to live on land in the 1960s
as a result of rising piracy.
• The tribe has a very rich culture. They are known for their non-
confrontational nature and values of respect. They are governed by a
Chieftan and a group of elders.

however, that the Badjao
were originally of the
land-based Sama group
but branched off into boat
dwellers as a result of
their occupation. This
practice might have
subsequently spread to
the area around Malaysia.

• Religion: They are Sunni Islam.


• Beliefs: They believe in Spiritism.

• Tradition: Traditionally live on
houseboats, arranged marriages
(Buya), oral tradition that includes
storytelling about the origin of Sablay
certain creatures like sea dragons
or mermaids.
• Clothing & Accessories: The
Sawwal
patadjung or tadjong has many Kantiu
uses.

MAMANWA
• In Mindanao, the Aeta known as the
Mamanwa lives in Surigao and
Agusan.
• “First Forest Dwellers”, derived from
“man” and “banwa” (forest). However,
they are popularly called “Kongking”
because of their kinky hair.
• The term could be derived from the word
“conquista”, the conquered ones.
MAMANWA
• Resides in Panaoan Island,
Southern Leyte, Agusan del
Norte, Surigao del Norte, and
Surigao del Sur.
• There are approximately 5,000
speakers of their language of
the same name Mamanwa,
which is under the umbrella
Bisaya languages.
MAMANWA
• Religion: They are animist
(Magbabaya being their main deity).
• Languange: It is closely related to
other Philippine languages such as
Surigaonon, Butuanon, Bislig,
Kamayo, and Cebuano and can be
written with the Latin alphabet.
• Tradition: The Mamanwa people are
known for their traditional hunting
practices and their nomadic lifestyle.
• Characteristic: The Peace-Loving
Mamanwas
