What is Baptism?
-Baptism is the sacrament that frees man from
original sin and from personal guilt, that makes him
a member of Christ and His Church. It is thus the
door to a new and supernatural life.

-This new life is the presence of God, who is life itself,

within a person’s soul
Identification
The person who is baptized is called;
-Temple of the Holy Spirit

- Children of God

- Also give us a new family

Importance of Baptism
1. Baptism was ordained by Christ
-“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to
me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I
have commanded you. And behold, I am with you
always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20).
2. Baptism marks the personal identification with
Christ
– Baptism provides an opportunity to identify with
Christ’s death and resurrection.
3.Baptism marks the entrance into the Christian family
- Being baptized marks a beginning of a journey of
faith together with the family of Christian believers.
4. Baptism is a public confession of faith
-When a new believer is baptized, he or she is giving a
public testimony of his or her faith in Jesus as others are
witnessing this public identification with Christ and the
Christian church.
5. Baptism is necessary for salvation
-Baptism is said to be “for the remission of sins” and to
“wash your sins away” (Acts 2:38; 22:16).
-Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you,
in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.
And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38)

-And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash
away your sins, calling on his name.
(Acts 22:16)
Why does Baptism have to come first?

-Baptism is the first sacrament of the Christian life. A

person can never receive any of the other sacraments
without first receiving baptism, because baptism makes
us members of Christ’s Church, and unless we are
members of his Church we cannot receive his
sacraments.
How Baptism is done?
-In Catholicism the baptism of infants is the most
common form, but unbaptized children or adults who
wish to join the faith must also receive the sacrament.
- holy water is usually sprinkled or poured on the
head by a priest who simultaneously invokes the
Trinity with the words, “I baptize you in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
The old self is said to die in the waters, and a new self
emerges, mirroring the death and resurrection of
Christ.
What are the symbols of Baptism and
what do they mean?

The Effects of the Sacrament of Baptism:

Baptism has six primary effects, which are all

supernatural graces:
1. The removal of the guilt of both Original Sin (the sin
imparted to all mankind by the Fall of Adam and Eve in
the Garden of Eden) and personal sin (the sins that we
have committed ourselves).
2. The remission of all punishment that we owe because
of sin, both temporal (in this world and in Purgatory) and
eternal (the punishment that we would suffer in hell).

3. The infusion of grace in the form of sanctifying grace

(the life of God within us); the seven gifts of the Holy
Spirit; and the three theological virtues
4. Becoming a part of Christ

5. Becoming a part of the Church, which is the Mystical

Body of Christ on earth.

6. Enabling participation in the sacraments, the

priesthood of all believers, and the growth in grace.
