SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH (SDOH)
 The social determinants of health are the conditions in which
people are born, grow, live, work and age as well as the complex,
interrelated social structures and economic systems that shape
these conditions.

https://www.cdc.gov/socialdeterminants/index.htm
https://www.cdc.gov/publichealthgateway/images/sdoh/SDOH-icons.png
SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH (SDOH)

 Social determinants of health include aspects of the social

environment (e.g., discrimination, income, education level,
marital status), the physical environment (e.g., place of
residence, crowding conditions, built environment [i.e., buildings,
spaces, transportation systems, and products that are created or
modified by people]), and health services (e.g., access to and
quality of care, insurance status).
HEALTH DISPARITIES
 Health disparities are preventable differences in the burden of
disease, injury, violence, or opportunities to achieve optimal
health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged
populations.
WHAT ARE CANCER HEALTH
DISPARITIES?
 Cancer health disparities are adverse differences between
certain population groups in cancer measures, such as:
incidence (new cases), prevalence (all existing cases),
morbidity (cancer-related health complications), mortality
(deaths), survivorship and quality of life after cancer
treatment, burden of cancer or related health conditions,
screening rates, and stage at diagnosis.
THEATER OUTREACH PROGRAM (TOP)
AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
PURPOSE OF COMMUNITY
OUTREACH
 Raise awareness about
cancer prevention and
screening
 Engage the community to
take action related to their
health
 Bridge relationships
between health
organizations, community
stakeholders, and the
community at-large
THEATER OUTREACH PROGRAM
 The OOHD implemented the TOP in 2008 with
its debut of the colorectal cancer awareness
drama, The Marriage Test.

 Theater outreach is used as:

• an educational tool in health communication

• a creative strategy for reaching individuals

with health-related messages

• a mechanism to increase awareness,

increased collective thinking, and action

Neumark-Sztainer et al., 2008; Elkind et al., 2002

THEATER OUTREACH
PROGRAM
 This program works with local playwrights to develop culturally and
linguistically appropriate full-length plays and monologues for
minority communities in Houston/Harris County and surrounding areas.
 It also collaborates with community organizations to host plays or present
virtual monologues for underserved populations in areas where there are
high incidences of cancer.
THEATER OUTREACH
PROGRAM
 The evidence-based monologues are developed to target the African
American, Hispanic, and Vietnamese communities in Houston and
surrounding areas.
 The monologues raise awareness about cancer screening and early detection
for the most common cancers (colorectal, cervical, and breast).
 Other monologues promote the uptake of the HPV vaccine and minority
clinical trials participation.
PRE-RECORDED MONOLOGUE PERFORMANCES
 Due to COVID-19, the monologues are presented
virtually via the Zoom application and in
collaboration with community organizations.

 Each Zoom performance includes:

• Virtual pre-recorded 6-12 min monologue

• A Q & A session with a healthcare professional

• A brief post-performance survey

• Educational materials and community

resources about cancer screening services to
the audience members
EVALUATION SURVEYS
 Brief evaluation surveys are
conducted to:
• assess audience members’
awareness of cancer screening
after performances;
• and intentions to obtain the
screening test after
performances.
 Demographic information (gender,
age, and race/ethnic background)
are also collected to describe the
audience.
PATIENT ACCESS NAVIGATION
 We provide patient access navigation in collaboration
with organizations that provide cancer screening or HPV
vaccinations.
 Community resource list is provided to event attendees
for screening services.
EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS
 Culturally and linguistically
appropriate materials are
distributed at every community
outreach event specific to the
cancer site
 Printed materials and information
for accessing digital educational
videos and materials are available
to the public
EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS: CANCER
WHEELS
 Provides recommended cancer prevention guidelines for cancer
screening in men and women.
 These recommendations are based upon guidelines established
by the American Cancer Society for the average population
 Cancer screening sites include:
• Women: cervix, breast, colon, and skin
• Men: prostate, colon, and skin
 The cancer wheels are arranged by cancer site, names the
specific screening test, when an individual should began taking
the test, and how often a test should occur.
 The wheels are available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese.
