What Is A Drilling Machine?
It is a powerful tool used to cut a round hole into or through wood, plastic, metal,
or other solid materials through advancing and turning rotary drill bits into a
workpiece.

There are different operations can be performed on a drilling machine, such as

plane drilling, counterboring, reaming, countersinking, and trepanning. (1)

Main Components of Drilling Machine and Functions

• Base
The whole machine is mounted and supported by the base.

• Column
Its functions as a linear slide on which the table is raised and lowered.

• Spindle
They transmit the rotational motion of the drill head. With the aid of the rack and
pinion system, it can move up and down.

• Chuck
It is used to hold the tool tightly to prevent it from slipping. (2)

• Table
The table provides the workpiece with a stable surface. It can be lifted or lowered to alter the
distance between the drill bit and the workpiece.

• Head
The spindle, the feed mechanism, and the drill chuck are all housed within the drill head.

• Electric Motor
It can either directly drive the spindle through the use of a gearbox or indirectly through the use
of a series of belts and pulleys.(2)

typically larger and more complex than other types of drilling
machines, and are typically used in a workshop or factory setting.
Based on the type of column used, it’s divided into:

1. Round column upright drilling machine

2. Box column upright drilling machine
