• Swami Vivekananda was a great Indian saint.

He was a
figure with “high thinking and simple living”. He was
a great pious(religious) leader, a philosopher, and also
a devout(showing deep religious feeling or
commitment) personality with great principles.
• Swami Vivekananda is credited with introducing the
West to the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga.
He worked in the field of social service. He spoke to
people in India and urged them to eliminate the caste
system and promote science and industrialisation.
• On his return to India with a small group of Western Area and
disciples in 1897, Vivekananda founded
the Ramakrishna Mission at the monastery of Belur organisation Swami
Math on the Ganges (Ganga) River near Calcutta Vivekananda worked
(now Kolkata). Vivekananda toured the entire India
and worked towards the upliftment of the poor and upon
needy. The ramakrishna mission still dedicatedly works
towards popularising Hinduism and helping the needy.
• It was a decision of the Government of India taken
in 1984 to celebrate the birthday of great Swami
Vivekananda ,12 January, as National Youth Day
every year. The philosophy of Swamiji and the ideals
for which he lived and worked could be a great source
of inspiration for the Indian Youth Day.
• He founded the Vedanta Society in New York and
established chapters in Boston and San Francisco.
