ANALYSIS

WHAT IS THE
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
PUBLIC SPEAKING AND
SPEECH?
slidesmania.com

Public Speaking is about

conveying a message to your
audience. The focus should
therefore be on your audience
and NOT on you as the
speaker.

Script for Speech

ABSTRACTION
Constructing A Script for Speech
1.Keep it Quick and Dirty- Keep it short. Don’t cut yourself short,
but do fill your time with relevant material that will keep your
audience interested.

2. Orient Your Listener-Take control of your listeners’ expectations.

A strong introduction is important whether you’re writing or
speaking, but it takes a lot longer to listen to a speech than to read an
article, and it will help your audience commit to your presentation.

3.Keep Important Information at the Beginning of Your
Sentences -Keep your listeners hooked throughout your
speech by crafting your sentences in a way that grabs them at
the beginning.

4.Finish Strong- To help your audience walk away satisfied,

finish by reminding them of what they’ve learned and if
appropriate.

5. Write an Outline, Then Write Your Speech- Write
an outline, but don’t stop there. An outline can be a great tool to
help you organize your thoughts, but it’s no substitute for a
polished presentation.

6.Be Conversational- Write with a conversational tone. Most of

us don’t write and speak the same way, and that’s OK. But when
preparing a speech or presentation, you should try to write the
way you speak.

7. Know Your Speaker- You’ve probably already heard the advice
“know your audience,” but when you’re writing a script, it’s just as
important to consider who will say your words as who will hear
them. If you’re writing for yourself, it’s easy, but if you’re writing
for someone else, you may need to adjust your voice and tone. You
don’t have to imitate people; they’ll find ways to personalize the
material. Don’t write in a way that obviously doesn’t fit the
person’s style and situation.

8.Practice, Polish, and Perfect- Whether you decide to read your
talk, recite it, or speak from an outline, be sure to rehearse.

9.Stop Worrying- In conclusion, writing a speech is different from

writing for print or the web. You need to set your audience’s
expectations, write in a way that sounds like natural speech, and then
once you’ve written the speech, you need to know it so well that you
sound like you’re speaking to a friend instead of delivering prepared
material.

DELIVERING SPEECH
WITH CONFIDENCE
slidesmania.com

Did you know?

WHY CONFIDENCE IS IMPORTANT
IN PUBLIC SPEAKING
?
slidesmania.com
Confidence in public speaking is important because it
allows you as the speaker to:
1.Take your focus off yourself and focus on the
audience.- This is possible by having a healthy mindset towards
the audience. A confident speaker has the mindset that the
audience is backing them from the start.

2. Eliminate distracting thoughts allowing you to

concentrate on delivering the message.- Many speakers
have a mind blank on stage because they have so many competing
thoughts about their own insecurities and vulnerabilities which cloud
their mind. Being confident means you can think straight and
managing your thoughts as opposed to your thoughts managing you.

Confidence in public speaking is important because it
allows you as the speaker to:
3.Prepare a message which is full of content designed with the audience in
mind instead of content designed to make you look, sound and/or feel
good- Speakers that lack confidence often go off on unrelated tangents, use
jargon and unnecessary complex language and their message can lack relevant
personal stories. A confident speaker has a message which is relevant, simple
and honest often drawing on personal stories to build rapport.

4.Read the audience’s body language and adapt your speaking style
accordingly.- Speakers that lack confidence are usually so consumed and
concentrating on their own body language and delivery style that they fail to take
account of the non verbal feedback from their audience. A confident speaker can
adapt delivery style in response to the how the audience is reacting.

Confidence in public speaking is important because it
allows you as the speaker to:
5. Come across to your audience as cool calm and in
control even if things are not going according to
plan.- For speakers that lack confidence, unplanned hurdles can really rattle
them and the audience can easily pick up on this. A confident speaker is able to
deal with the challenges without displaying them on stage.

6. Have the X factor on stage. -There is no doubt about it

confidence is attractive in a speaker and the audience in most cases responds
positively to it. A speaker lacking in confidence may attempt to mask it by over
compensating resulting in being perceived as arrogant, or openly displaying such
a lack of confidence the audience is left questioning the speaker’s motives for
being on stage in the first place. A confident speaker is far more likely to have the
X factor.

Confidence in public speaking is important because it

allows you as the speaker to:

7. To give you credibility as a speaker- Many speakers

lacking in confidence and crippled by insecurities may be
guilty of excessive name dropping, boasting about level of
experience and/or over-emphasizing their credentials. A
confident speaker knows the exact amount of information
required to build credibility weaving in examples and
stories without being overbearing.

STRATEGIES IN
DEVELOPING
CONFIDENCE TO
DELIVER SPEECH
slidesmania.com

1. DEAL WITH ANY NEGATIVE PAST PUBLIC SPEAKING EXPERIENCES.

You may have experienced an extended awkward pause and wished the ground would
swallow you up. Or perhaps you have literally fainted under the pressure. Regardless
of the severity of the negative experience, the flash-backs can cause you to freeze or
throw up at even the thought of ever speaking publicly again.

2. DRAW ON POSITIVE PAST SPEAKING EXPERIENCES

Whilst it may be a very different type and size of audience, or a different speech topic,
drawing on positive past public speaking experiences is very effective in building your
confidence for your next speech/presentation.

3. WATCH YOURSELF ON CAMERA AND WRITE DOWN THE THINGS YOU LIKE
Watching yourself on camera is such an effective way of getting an appreciation and insight
into what the audience experiences when you speak. However, only reviewing your
recording identifying all things you need to fix is only one side of the coin. It is important to
review your footage and identify what you like about your speaking as well.

4. DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS, LEARN WHAT YOU CAN AND

MOVE ON
Comparison can be very destructive in your confidence building process. There are always
going to be people around you or those you admire that you may consider are ‘better’ than
you. Learn what you can from others and move on. Don’t waste your time and energy
constantly measuring and benchmarking yourself against others.

5.BACK YOURSELF WITH YOUR WORDS

Words are powerful. What you say about yourself will shape your future. Speaking
really critically of yourself as a speaker can be a huge hindrance in building your
confidence and negativity is not attractive. Instead back yourself with your words.

6. CONFIDENCE AND ARROGANCE ARE DIFFERENT – DON’T FEAR BEING

CONFIDENT
Arrogant people are not concerned at all about the audience’s perception as sadly
they are so consumed and focused on themselves. If you have a healthy mindset and
attitude as a speaker you won’t come across as arrogant. You therefore don’t need to
fear how your confidence will be perceived which in turn will help you to embrace
and build your confidence.

7. PRACTICE
If you want to build your confidence as a speaker, be
intentional about investing time in developing your speaking
skills. Practicing will help you master the art of public
speaking and this is the key reason why we run public
speaking courses – to allow speakers like you to practice
which will build your confidence. Practice results in progress
and your confidence gets built when you know you are
making progress.
