OF FOLK DANCE

WHAT IS PHILIPPINE FOLK DANCE?

Philippine Folk Dance are a celebration of daily life, health, peace, war,
harvest times and other aspects of life. According to the National
Commission for Culture and the Arts, Philippine folk dances imitate
nature and life because they are rituals for social and spiritual
expression.
1.) Religious dance
-it is a ritual dance representing
Christianity. Its about fertility,
offering prayers, and
thanksgiving.

2.) Ethnic/Indigenous dances
- It represents the daily lives of
the people in a community
and imitate nature or animals.
Carinosa is the example of
Indigenous dances.

CHARACTERISTICS OF FOLK DANCE

• It is traditional
• It’s rhythm has a simple pattern of movements
• It strengthens the cultural values of a community
• Shows the beliefs of the people in a community
• Body, hands, and feet movements have meaning
FOLK DANCES IN LUZON
Kalapati Dance

- It’s a dance interpreted by imitating the


movements of a beautiful dove and
signifies peace. It’s from Cabugao,
Ilocus Sur.
Sayaw sa Bangko

- Is a skillful bench dance that


originated I Pangasinan.
Subli Dance

-Subli comes from the word ‘subsub’


which means falling “head on” and
‘bali’ which means “broken”
FOLK DANCES IN VISAYAS
Mnanagat Dance

- Mananagat of Cebu represents the


fisherman it imitates scooping of water,
swinging of the wooden paddles, and
catching fish with a fishnet.
Mazurka Boholana is a Spanish-inspired
ballroom dance from Bohol that is
customarily performed by men and
women.
Kuratsa Dance

- It’s a courtsdhip dance in Samar and


Leyte. It is performed during social
gatherings. It imitates roaster and a hen.

Itik- Itik Dance

- It imitates the movements of a duck


fromm Surigao del Norte
Singkil Dance

-Singkil is a folk dance of the Maranao


representing one of the episodes in the
epic poem Darangan.
Kappa Malong- Malong

-It’s a Muslim dance of Maranao tribes


showing the ways of wearing their
tubular clothing named “malong”
