Activity 1: Identify the dance and describe where its origin or this dance
came from?
Banga
Place of Origin: Kalinga, Cordillera of Northern Luzon
“Banga”, literally means clay pots and the dance
came to be known as the “clay pot dance.” The Banga or
pot dance is a contemporary performance of Kalinga of
the Mountain Province in the Philippines. This dance
illustrates the languid grace of a tribe otherwise, known
as fierce warriors. This dance has also been rightfully
called “The balancing act of life” because life is full of
hardships and challenges. Especially for women who
struggle and juggle with problems every day.

Pantomina

Place of Origin: Sorsogon, Bicol

The pantomina was originally a wedding dance from Bicol

provinces.
Vxsxz Pantomina is Spanish for “pantomime”, because of its love and
courting c movements. Its old name, Salampati
meaning “doves”, referred to as the c “dance of the doves.”

Tinikling

Place of Origin: Leyte in the Visayas

The “tinikling”, is considered a national dance in the

Philippines and every Filipinos knows how to do it or dance into it.
The Tinikling is said to be named after the long-legged bird called
the tikling and tinikling means “bamboo dance”, in English. The
dance imitates the movement of the tikling bird’s as they walk
between grass stems, run over tree branches, or dodge bamboo
traps set by rice farmers. Dancers imitate the tikling bird’s legendary grace and speed by
skillfully maneuvering between large bamboo poles.

Activity 2: Explain further

1. What is the role of folk dances in the culture of the people? How did
Spanish dance contribute too?
Folk dance is a way and part of life which can be found in every culture of a
country. Folk dances are part of people’s life and come as a role model in the daily
life of every human to human relations and human to nature relations. Folkdance is
in the center of human social life. People have been doing folk dances for hundreds
and even thousands of years, and all throughout there is a value keeping that
tradition to actively alive. Folk dances are important because they preserve the
Philippine culture and pass it on to the next generation. They are a uniting force to
the Philippine people. Over 400 years of Spanish colonization has been left an
irremovable mark on the Philippines, especially the tradition and culture of ethnic
dances. There are few reasons why the Spanish has contribute to our culture is that
Spain brought various creation such as clothing, dancing, etc. and even day to day
living. That is why those Philippine aristocrats adapted it as well and as decades
passed through generations it was been part of the culture of today Philippine
traditions.
2. How do values derived in studying folkdance affect the daily lives of the
people?
Dance is a performance art form consisting of purposefully selected dance
sequence of human and body movements which has aesthetic and symbolic value.
The study of folk dance or the Philippine folk dances can really help other people to
understand the way of how they live into a certain area or places; the way on their
traditions of their culture is greatly emphasized into them. It’s like there is a
connection between the dancer and the audience that can relate into each other
and behind in the dancing steps have a significant impact in the society and the
lives of each person such as it affects the feelings, emotions, and even
experiences. Another is it acquires their motor skills to be use accordingly to the
type of steps and movements. Each country has its own styles of folk dancing that
showcase and at the same time giving respect to the origins of the culture and the
people give importance to their traditions and norms. Dancing allows one to
express oneself!
3. As a student, how can you help preserve and promote our cultural
heritage?
I believe in the saying of Marcus Garvey, “a people without the knowledge of
their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” Cultural heritage is
the legacy of physical artifacts and intangible attributes of a group or society that
are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for the
benefit of future generations. So as a student, in order to help preserve and
promote our cultural heritage is that by safeguarding them is about the transferring
of knowledge, skills and meaning. In other words, focusing on the processes
involved in transmitting, or communicating intangible cultural heritage from
generation to generation, rather than on the production of its concrete
manifestations, such as a dance performance, a song, a music instrument or a
craft. The sustainability of the preservation of cultural heritage is through education
encouraging the students and even other people to communicating, learning, ideas,
intercultural dialogue in appreciating art and dance. The best way to preserve
cultural heritage, whatever it may be, is to share it with others and practical
practices.
