DANCE or DANCING – is
said to be a stress reliever
- it can also be a form of
exercises that will help boost the
immune system of the body
FOLK DANCE- the oldest form of
dance and the earliest form of
communication- the traditional dance
of a given country which evolved
naturally and spontaneously with
everyday activities
According to popular tradition, the dance was
created by a lady named Kanang who
choreographed the steps while dancing at a
baptismal party. The other guests copied her
movements, and everyone liked the dance so
much that it has been passed along ever since.
Philippine folk dances are a tradition
dance of the people from one
generation to another. They are means
of expressing the beliefs, moods and
emotions of a people, and have been
the mode of communication.

Maglalatik – An example of Philippine
folk dance that originated in Biñan,
Laguna Binasuan – Binasuan is a tribal
dance in the Philippines that originated in
Pangasinan
Singkil is a Mindanao folk dance that
originated in Lake Lanao
CLASSIFICATION OF
PHILIPPINE FOLK DANCE
Occupational dances
depict the lifestyle and
daily work of the people
living in various
topographies.
Religious dance
– associated with
religion, vows and
ceremonies
Comic dances - are those
that depict funny
movements for
entertainment. Two
examples of comic dance
are Makonggo and
Kinoton.
Game dance – it
is a dance that
done with play
elements.
Wedding dance is when
a specific song comes on
that has a corresponding
dance to go along with it
(usually well-known).
Courtship dance - known since the
period of Spanish colonization, it is
danced to the rapid, rhythmic music
of guitars. The dancing couple
pursue and retreat, pass and circle
about each other, twirling
handkerchiefs as they dance.
Festival dances are cultural dances
performed to the strong beats of
percussion instruments by a community
of people sharing the same culture
usually done in honor of a Patron Saint
or in thanksgiving of a bountiful
harvest. Festival dances may be
religious or secular in nature.
War dance - is a dance
involving mock combat, usually
in reference to tribal warrior
societies where such dances were
performed as a ritual connected
with endemic warfare.
