PROBLEM STATEMENT
• Malnutrition has been a major factor that
account for the slow and inappropriate growth
and development of children (WHO, 2010).
• This is due to the lack of adequate knowledge
on the importance of Good child nutrition by
the parents which makes the effects of
malnutrition to be frequently seen in children
SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
• This study is aimed at bringing out better
information that will help parents improve
their knowledge and help them in the
practices of proper nutritional patterns for
their children
RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
• Null Hypothesis, Ho: Parent have adequate
knowledge on the causes and effects of
malnutrition in children.
• Alternate Hypothesis, Hi: Parent do not have
adequate knowledge on the causes and
effects of malnutrition in children.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
• To assess the knowledge of parent on the
causes of malnutrition in children (0-5years).
• To identify the risk factors of malnutrition in
children (0-5years).
• To assess parent knowledge of the effect of
malnutrition in children (0-5years).
STUDY DESIGN
For the purpose of this research, the descriptive
quantitative survey design method was
considered since the collection, analysis and
interpretation of data were intended to be
represented using statistical tools such as tables,
charts, histograms
STUDY AREA
This research will be carried out in the Ndobo
community, Bonaberi Douala, Cameroon under
a time frame of from 17th October 2022 –31 st
March 2023.
STUDY POPULATION
• The target population for this study was
mothers who of children age 0-5yrs who were
residing in bonaberi at the time of study.
INCLUSION CRITERIA
• Mothers who were present in bonaberi at the
time of the research

their time to take part of the research and
could answer questions freely without being
ashamed.
• Mothers who could read and write English or
French.

• Mothers who refused to be part of the
exercise.
• Mothers who could not read nor write English

DATA
COLLECTION/MANAGEMENT
• A semi-structural questionnaire composed of
opened and close-ended was used to collect
data. On this questionnaire, there was a short
instruction addressed to the respondents,
informing them on how to answer the
questions

DISCUSSION
Mothers Knowledge on malnutrition in Children 0-5
Years
Based on the data analysis on the causes of
malnutrition in children, 28 mothers with a the
greatest percentage of 66% said that malnutrition in
children occurs as a result of poor hygienic condition
preparing the child’s food. This is in line with
WHO,2006 that says diseases, poor hygienic
condition, poverty and unsafe water can lead to
malnutrition.
DISCUSSION
Mothers Knowledge on effects of malnutrition
in Children 0-5 Years
• 32 mothers with 43 % said that malnutrition in
children will lead to a reduction in the
immunity and may also lead to anemia and
death. This is in line with Sandige et al; 2004
who says a malnourished child is likely to have
low weight thereby being predisposed to
disease and premature death.
DISCUSSION
• Mothers Knowledge on the prevention of
malnutrition in Children 0-5 Years
12 mothers with a percentage of 40% being the
majority said that exclusive breastfeeding from
0-6 months can prevent malnutrition in children.
This is in line with UNICEF, (2006) who says a
good nutrition is the cornerstone for survival,
CONCLUSION
From of the data analyzed, it can be concluded that;
• Majority28(66.21%) of the study population
understand the causes of malnutrition in children 0-5
years.
• Majority 34(45.94%) of the mothers did not
understand the signs and symptoms of malnutrition in
children 0-5 years.
• Prevention of malnutrition in children is well known
by the mothers which is represented by 28(41%) .
RECOMMENDATION
• Outreach campaign programmers should be
organized constantly in order to educate the
mothers more on the signs and symptoms,
causes, effects and prevention of malnutrition in
children 0-5 years. Also emphasis should be laid to
mothers on exclusive breast feeding from 0-6
months of a child since breast milk contain all the
nutrients that a child need in order to grow
healthy.
