SOCIAL GRACES KNOWN AS GOOD MANNERS & ETIQUETTE

SOCIAL GRACES
SOCIAL GRACES, more commonly known as good manners and
etiquette, is not a mere “put on” to one’s personality. It is (and
should be) a part of a persons character.

MANNERS can be defined as a habitual social conduct, bearing

or behavior. Behavior done with sense is a basis of good manners.

Knowledge of good manners can increase a person’s self-

confidence, gives him a sense of security, poise and respect.

As a person matures, people expect his manners to be more

refined and less vulgar, barbaric or course. Since Childhood, we
have been taught proper obedience and good conduct pertaining to
different types of situations.
SOCIAL GRACES

“Para kang hindi edukado” you act as though you are uneducated” can often be heard
from people signifying displeasure over another person’s failure to manifest good
manners.
People expect us to show manners, which conform to the milieu we are in. What may
have been socially unacceptable before may no longer be so today, and vice versa.
What may be acceptable in another society may not be acceptable in ours. Values,
norms , beliefs and institutions differ, and so do good manners.
Despite societal difference in behavior norms and manners, there still are a lot of
universally applicable good manners and proper conduct.
Manners can spell the difference on the feelings people will have towards you.
Etiquette, on the other hand, consists of a “set of rules of living in our society”. Only
the hard-to-get-along-with persons disregard etiquette. It involves practicing or
applying a special code of behavior or courtesy. Good manners is governed by
etiquette.
