Intended Learning Outcome:

1. Name Filipino authors who became “National


Artists in Literature”.
2. Analyze the relevance of the authors’ choice of
literary selection’s theme.
3. Infer values from each literary work.
Introduction

• Literature is a creative way of expression


through the use of words and symbols. Every
author has a purpose of creating a literary
words and symbols.
• Some of their writings reflect their personal and
aesthetic experiences while some uses cultural
or societal viewpoint as an inspiration for their
writings.
Introduction

• In Philippines, National Artist for Literature is the highest


recognition given to those Filipino individuals who have
made significant contributions in the world of literary
writing.
• Works were measured through creative expressions of
imagination, theme, relevance and highly aesthetic form
of art.
• As part of honor and cultural heritage, each of the
nominees for the prestigious recognition should be
recommended by National Commission for Culture and
Arts (NCCA) and Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP)
with the confirmation of the Philippine Presiddent.
Jose Garcia Villa

• José Garcia Villa (August 5,


1908 – February 7, 1997) was
a Filipino poet, literary
critic, short story writer, and
painter.
• He was awarded the
National Artist of the Philippi
nes
title for literature in 1973 in
his story Foothnote to Youth.
Jose Garcia Villa

• After the publication of Footnote to Youth in 1933, Villa


switched from writing prose to poetry, and published
only a handful of works until 1942.
• During the release of Have Come, Am Here in 1942, he
introduced a new rhyming scheme called "reversed
consonance" wherein, according to Villa: "The last
sounded consonants of the last syllable, or the last
principal consonant of a word, are reversed for the
corresponding rhyme. Thus, a rhyme for near would
be run; or rain, green, reign."
Amado H. Hernandez

• Amado V. Hernandez
(September 13, 1903 – March 24,
1970), was a Filipino writer and
labor leader who was known for
his criticism of social injustices
in the Philippines and was later
imprisoned for his involvement
in the communist movement.
• He was awarded the
National Artist of the Philippines
title for literature in 1973 in his
story Mga Ibong Mandaragit
(Birds of Prey)
Nick Joaquin

• Nicomedes "Nick" Márquez


Joaquín (May 4, 1917 – April 29,
2004) was a Filipino writer and
journalist best known for his
short stories and novels in the
English language.
• Joaquín was conferred the rank and
title of
National Artist of the Philippines for
Literature in his story May Day Eve.
• He has been considered one of the
most important Filipino writers,
along with José Rizal and
Claro M. Recto.
Carlos P. Romulo

• Carlos Peña Romulo, QSC, CLH, NA (14


January 1898 – 15 December 1985) was a
Filipino diplomat, statesman, soldier,
journalist and author.
• He was a reporter at 16, a newspaper
editor by the age of 20, and a publisher at
32. He was a co-founder of the
Boy Scouts of the Philippines, a general in
the US Army and the Philippine Army,
university president, President of the UN
General Assembly, was eventually named
one of the Philippines' National Artists in
Literature in his story “, and was the
recipient of many other honors and
honorary degrees.
N.V.M Gonzales

• Néstor Vicente Madali


González (September 8, 1915 –
November 28, 1999) was a Filipino
novelist, short story writer, essayist
and, poet. Conferred as the
National Artist of the Philippines for
Literature in 1997 for his story Bread
of Salt.
• The works of Gonzalez have been
published in Filipino, English, Chinese
, German, Russian and Indonesian.
