Risk factors

Ingestion of Gastric Contents: Aspiration pneumonitis can

occur when stomach contents are aspirated into the lungs, leading to
chemical irritation.

Neurological Conditions: Conditions affecting swallowing

reflexes, such as stroke or seizures, increase the risk of aspiration

General Anesthesia: Patients under general anesthesia may be at

risk due to suppressed protective airway reflexes.

Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Chronic reflux

increases the likelihood of stomach content entering the airways.
Age: Elderly individuals may have weakened protective mechanisms, making
them more susceptible.

Swallowing Disorders: Conditions that affect the ability to swallow, such as

dysphagia, elevate the risk of aspiration.

Intubation: Patients on mechanical ventilation with an endotracheal tube are

at increased risk.
