Countries in Southeast Asia Region

There are 11 countries in the Southeast Asia


region which can be classified into two
groups according to geographical locations
as follows:

1. Mainland countries include Thailand,


Myanmar, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Malaysia,
and Vietnam.

2. Island countries include Singapore,


Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei
Darussalam, and Timor-Leste or East
Timor.

pages 168 to 177 and create 10 groups. (One group selects one
country.) Each group is assigned to search for pictures and
information about the history, population, political system, social
condition, economy, and other related information about that
country.

ASEAN Background

o The Association of Southeast Asian


Nations, commonly abbreviated as
ASEAN, was established on 8 August
1967 with the signing of the ASEAN
Declaration (Bangkok Declaration).

o The objective is to accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural


development to protect regional peace and stability, and to provide opportunities for
member countries to discuss differences peacefully in order to strengthen the
foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community of Southeast Asian Nations.

ASEAN Background

o The founding nations of ASEAN are


Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines,
Singapore and Thailand.

o Brunei Darussalam then joined on 7 January


1984, Vietnam on 28 July 1995, Lao PDR
and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and
Cambodia on 30 April 1999, making up what
is today the ten member states of ASEAN.

ASEAN Background
At the ASEAN Formal Summits in October 2003,
the Declaration of ASEAN Concord II (Bali
Concord II) had been approved by ASEAN Heads
of State/Government to set up an ASEAN
Community in 2020, later on brought forward to
2015 by comprising the “three pillars” which are:

1. ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC)

2. ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)

3. ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC)

1. ASEAN Political-Security Community


(APSC)

The principle aims to ensure countries in the


region live at peace with one another, resolve
multilateral conflicts and map out cooperative
frameworks to deal with both conventional
and unconventional security threats.

2. ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)

The principle aims to advance regional


economic opportunities, facilitate multilateral
trading and establish ASEAN as a single
market and production base in order to make
the people in ASEAN live happily and enjoy a
high quality of life.

3. ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community


(ASCC)

The principle aims at building peaceful and


harmonious coexistence in the region while

Located in Jakarta, Indonesia, the ASEAN Secretariat


serves as a centre for effective implementation of
ASEAN member states. The present ASEAN Secretary
General is Dato Lim Jok Hoi from Brunei Darussalam.
