INTRODUCTION
• Noble Peace Prize winner Shri Kailash Satyarthi is a
human rights activist from India who has been at the
forefront of the global movement to end child slavery and
exploitative child labor since 1980.
EARLY LIFE
 Kailash Satyarthi ji was born on 11January 1954 in the Vidisha district
of central Indian state Madhya Pradesh in a middle class Hindu family.
 He is the youngest among the four brothers and one sister. His father
was a retired constable and his mother was an uneducated housewife
with high morals. As per Satyarthi ,this exceptionally idealistic and
helpful nature of his mother had a great impact on him.
 He was raised in a locality (mohalla) where Hindus and Muslims lived
with each other. As a four-year-old toddler, he learned to read Urdu
from the Maulvi at the neighboring mosque and learned Hindi and
English in his school.
 Even as a child he was very compassionate individual. He noticed that
some children did not go to the school like he did and instead worked
under harsh conditions to earn money.
 Disturbed by the inequalities he witnessed ,he decided to do something
about it. He asked his classmates to donate textbooks and money to the
unprivileged so that the poor kids too get the chance to study.
 Satyarthi was significantly affected by the lack of school access for all
children and his experiences with poverty in his youth. He made efforts

 Satyarthi ji completed his education in Vidisha.
 He attended Government Boys Higher Secondary School in
Vidisha.
 He completed his undergraduate degree in electrical
engineering at Samrat Ashok Technological Institute in
Vidisha [then affiliated to the University of Bhopal,
( now Barkatullah University).
 And a post-graduate degree in high-voltage engineering.
 Later Satyarthi joined his college as a lecturer for a few
years.
Personal life
 He lives in Delhi.
 His family includes his wife( Sumedha Satyarthi ) , his
son(Buwan ribhu) , daughter-in-law and his daughter(Asmita
Satyarthi ).
 He has been described as an excellent cook.
WORK
• Noble Peace Prize winner Shri Kailash Satyarthi
gave up his job as lecturer to dedicate himself to
protecting and advancing child rights for over three
decades now, freeing 80,000 child laborers and
giving them new hope in life.
• From the factories exploiting children in country’s
biggest cities like Delhi and Mumbai in the
hinterland of Odisha and Jharkhand where children
are still illegally employed as bonded laborers ,his
organization has rescued them in almost all parts of
country.
• He has advocated for stricter laws against child
trafficking and labour and met with the mixed
success.
• He also played an important role in the movement
for RIGHT TO EDUCATION LAW for free
compulsory education to children.
• He created the GLOBAL MARCH
AGAINST CHILD LABOUR , a movement
that is active in many countries . He is also
credited with establishing Rugark , now
known as Good Weave, in 1994.
• He also founded the BACHPAN BACHAO
ANDOLAN (Save the Childhood
Movement).
• He also served as the president of Global
campaign for Education.
• Satyarthi serves on the board and committee
of several international organizations
including the Center for Victims of Torture
(USA) , the International Labor Rights
Fund(USA), and the International Cocoa
Foundation.
• He has been a member of UNESCO body
established to examine Chlid rights and has

films. In September 2017, India Times listed Satyarthi as one of the 11 Human Rights Activists Whose

Fascinating facts about Kailash Satyarthi
• Satyarthi’s family name was Sharma and not Satyarthi. After an incident in his
childhood his community outcasted him so few years later he adopted Satyarthi as
his family name/surname.
• Satyarthi ji loves taking selfies.
• His best meetings includes meeting with our prime ministen Mr. Narendra Modi,
USA’s 44th president Mr. Barak Obama and our former president shri Pranav
Mukharjee.
• In 2014, Kailash Satyarthi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Malala
Yousafzai for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people
and for the right of all children to education. Kailash has dedicated the entire prize
sum to the advancement of the rights of children.
• He is the first India-born person to be awarded with Noble Peace Prize and
seventh Indian Noble laureate
• On January 7, 2015, he handed over his Nobel medal to the President of India,
dedicating it to his motherland and its great people. The medal is now permanently
displayed at the President’s House Museum in New Delhi.
• Kailash Satyarthi and his wife Sumedha participated in Kaun Banega
Crorepati (KBC) 9 as the special guests for the grand finale episode.
On the show, Mr Satyarthi revealed the story behind change in his
surname, which was originally 'Sharma'.
• Kailash Satyarthi managed to win Rs 50 lakh on the hot seat which he
donated to his NGO - Bachpan Bachao Andolan.
• Kailash’s life has been full of risks, he has derived strength
from all the risks that confronted him. Two of his colleagues
have lost their lives while countless others have been
assaulted or badly beaten while rescuing children.
• After hearing the caste name changing story of Satyarthi, a
10th grade student Abdul Azeez changed his surname from
Azeez to Satyarthi.
• We all know in this pandemic specially in the second wave many
children lost their parents and no one is ready to take the
responsibilities of these children. But don’t worry Satyarthi is
their for them. He is providing these children with every possible
help (such as education, shelter, food) through his organization.
