Subject : Topic of discussion
Purpose : To inform or persuade the reader to agree with you
Focus : Conveys your point of view

Example 1: Problem-Solution Essay

Topic:
Air Pollution
General thesis statement:
There are many causes of air pollution and action should be taken to overcome the problem.
Specific thesis statement:
Open burning, deforestation and exhaust from factories are the causes of air pollution and
the solution is by imposing heavy fine to the offenders.

In my opinion, there are advantages and disadvantages if examination is abolished.

I agree with the statement because examination is the source of stress and pressure; it will create
jealousy and break up companionship.
I partially agree with the statement because examination is the only tool to assess students’ ability and
motivates them to study hard; however, it adds stress and pressure to the students.
