Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Education starts at home. The task to socialize and educate children is shared by both

parents and schools. Children are more likely to achieve academically when their parents

actively participate in their education, according to Bryan (2005). Education is crucial and

valuable to society. Education provides insight, expands knowledge, and improves skills.

Parental Encouragement has a big impact on students, especially in achieving good academic

performance. With financial support, students maintain good performance in school since their

parents provide for their needs such as food, clothes, school supplies, school fees, etc. Through

the moral support of parents, students dare to do well in school. This also will help not only in

achieving academic awards and good academic performance but also in having a positive

influence on students' mindsets and standpoints. Students who receive support from their parents

develop an appropriate attitude, perspective, and self-discipline at school. The more parental

support, the more students are likely to become more productive in learning. In order for a child

to attain academic success, parents must be involved in and participate in the educational

process.

However, too much parental encouragement may result in high expectations, they are

expecting high grades from their children, since they provide for the necessities of their child.

Which can cause difficulties for students who receive parental support from their parents. This

difficulty may result in unhealthy habits, anxiety, and stress, it also can affect students' emotional

health.

Parental support in the education of adolescents is critical for children's success in school

and eventually in life. Parental encouragement in adolescent education is essential for children to

be successful in school and later in their lives. Studies have shown (Lawrence and Barathi, 2016)

that parental encouragement and involvement in education is associated with (i) better grades

and test scores, (ii) better attendance, (iii) higher rates of homework completion, (iv) increase in

positive attitudes and behaviors at school and at home, (v) higher graduation rates, (vi) higher

college attendance rates, (vii) greater overall student achievement, (viii) better attitude toward

school and individual subject areas, (ix) more time to spent on homework and studying, and (x)

better self-concept. Parental encouragement is one of the parental treatment patterns that assist

and guide teenagers so that they do not become disheartened at a particular point of difficulties.

Statement of the Problem

The primary goal of this research is to know the impacts and effects of Parental

Encouragement on Students' Academic Performance among Junior High School Students

1. What are the effects of parental encouragement on students' academic performance among

Junior High School Students?

2. What are the factors that affects student’s academic achievements?

3. Can parental involvement can change the way students visualize the meaning of achievement?

4. Is there any significant relationship between student’s academic performance and parental

encouragement?

Scope and Delimitation

The study focused on the key factors affecting the student's academic performances

through parental encouragement in Sapang Palay National High School, School Year 2022-2023.

Recent studies and researchers can be used as reference in analyzing the effects in the academic

performances and how the students can stand out in the class by the help of parental support and

encouragement.

However, the primary focus of this study will be on determining the possible effects of
parental encouragement on a student's academic achievement. Other factors of influence
including peer encouragement may affect but will be excluded in the study.

Significance of the Study

The results of the study will be extremely beneficial to the following:

Students: This study will provide information to the students because they are the ones who

receive parental assistance in developing a positive mindset, motivation, and self-discipline in

school.

Parents: This research will be a useful reference that can be helpful for parents to help their

children achieve good academic performances since parents are involved in their children's

educational process and experiences.

Teachers: This study will be a useful reference that can be helpful for teachers to help their

students since teachers are the one who’s responsible for guiding learners, in order for them to

achieve their desired outcomes.
