1. Hopelessness; people do not learn from their mistakes.
2. The ages of the three casualties (a child, an old man, and one neither
young nor old) symbolizes that war destroys all ages. The single blanket
covering all three of the dead suggests that they are all equal; there is no
indication of whether or not they fought on the same side. The allusion of
Christ suggests that is was not enough for Christ to have died for man
once; he has had to come back and do it again, because man is no better
now than he was then.
