Ever wonder why Butuan and Sulu both boast their historical affinity with balangays (planked
boats)? That's because 500 years before Spanish invasion, Butuan was once a powerful Hindu-
influenced Kingdom rich in gold so powerful that it once had trading relationships with China,
Japan, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, and even Persia!

But during its downfall in early 1400s, the brother of the last rajah (king) migrated to the Sama-
Bajau dominated Sulu and established a new kingdom based on pearl trade. They now call
themselves Tausug, or the "People of the Current".

Time had passed that the Hindu Butuanons converted into Christianity (Spanish influence),
while Hindu Tausugs embraced Islam (Malay influence). Who would've thought they're once
brothers?
