RECALLING THE DEFINITION OF EXPONENT:

• Exponent tells how many times the base will

be multiplied by itself.
• Any number an , a is the base and n is the
exponent.

EXAMPLE
 53 means 5 is the base and 3 is the exponent,
 To simplify 5 . 5 . 5 =125
ACTIVITY 2
DIRECTION: Identify the exponent and the base in the
following terms, then simplify:

EXPONENT SIMPLIFIED OR
FORM BASE EXPONENT EXPANDED FORM

x4 x 4 x•x•x•x

25 2 5 2•2•2•2•2
42a3 4, a 2, 3 4•4•a•a•a
ACTIVITY 3 Direction: Drag the different synonyms of the word
“LAW” then drop inside the box.

Why do rules need to
be followed?
Rules provide clarity and
consistency; they act as simple
reminders and in case of misdemeanors
(a minor wrongdoing). they help
you pursue a fair and uniform
approach to discipline.
LAWS OF EXPONENT
• In Mathematics, there are different laws of exponents.
• All the rules of exponents are used to solve many
mathematical problems which involve repeated
multiplication processes.
• The laws of simplify the
exponents
multiplication and division operations
and help to solve the problems easily.

To find the product of two terms with
the same base; copy the base and then,
add the exponents.

a •a =a
m m m+n
PRODUCT RULE

Illustrative Example #1:

(𝑥3) (𝑥2) = 𝑥3+2 Since they have common

base which is “x”, copy the
common base and add the
exponents

= 𝑥5 Simplify the result

PRODUCT RULE

Illustrative Example #2:

(y10) (y23) = y10+23 Since they have common

base which is “y”, copy the
common base and add the
exponents

= y 33
Simplify the result
PRODUCT RULE

Illustrative Example #3:

(22) (23) = 22+3 Since they have common
base which is “2”, copy the
common base and add the
exponents
= 2 5
Expand and simplify the
result

= 2•2•2•2•2 =32
PRODUCT RULE

Illustrative Example #4 and #5:

(4m2)(3m4) = (4•3) (m2+4)

= 12m 6

(xy5)(x3y4) = (x1+3) (y5+4)

TRY THIS
= x 4 y9
DO YOU
HAVE ANY
QUESTION?
How to derive
product of powers?
The product of two
terms with the same
base; just copy the
base and then, add
the exponents.
QUESTIONS!
1.How did you find the
activity? Did you find any
difficulties in doing the
activity?
2.Did the activity help you to
understand the lesson?
