Activity #3

Name a geometric
figure in the following
object. Answer only. 5
THE NATURE OF GEOMETRY
GEOMETRY-
Derived from the Greek
words “geo” which
means “earth”
and “metrein” meaning
“measure”
“to measure the earth”
GEOMETRY-
Is a branch of Mathematics
that involves studying the
shapes, sizes, and positions of
geometric figures. These
include triangles and
rectangles in planes (two-
dimensions) and cubes and
spheres in solids (3D).
PERIMETER AND
AREAS
Closed figures
with three or
more sides are
generally called
polygons.
The perimeter of a two-dimensional figure is
simply the sum of the lengths of its sides.
EXAMPLE 1- RECTANGLE
A rectangular
piano is 42 inches
long and 14
inches wide. What
is its perimeter?

P= 2 x 42 + 2 x 14
= 84 + 28
= 112 inches.
EXAMPLE 2- TRIANGLE
A triangular park is
situated on the corner
of a town. If the lengths
of the sides are 975 ft,
1200 ft, and 1546.16,
what is the perimeter of
the park?

P= 975+1200+1546.16
= 3,721.16 ft.
The area of a two-dimensional figure is the
number of square units it takes to fill the
interior of the figure.
EXAMPLE 3- TRIANGLE
EXAMPLE 4- PARALLELOGRAM
EXAMPLE 5- TRAPEZOID
EXAMPLE 5- RECTANGLE
A rectangular
piano is 42 inches
long and 14
inches wide. What
is its area?

A= 42 x 14
= 588 square inches
EXAMPLE 6- SQUARE
EXAMPLE 7- CIRCLE
The surface area of a three-dimensional figure is
the sum of the areas of all the surfaces that
compose the figure.
The volume is the quantity of three-dimensional space
enclosed by a closed surface. It is the measure of how
much space is inside a given object. The volume of an
object is expressed in terms of cubic units.
Formulas for the
Volume and
Surface Area of
Different 3D
Rectangular Box
A tree trunk is to be cut into
pieces of lumber of size 20 ft
by 2 ft by 2 ft.
Find the volume and surface
area of each piece of lumber?
Cylinder- is a simple geometric shape with
two equally-sized and parallel circular bases.
A water tank is in the form of a
cylinder with a height of 75 cm
and a diameter of 77 cm. How
many liters of water can this tank
hold if 1 liter can be stored in
1,000 space. Assume that
Spheres- is a 3D counterpart of a circle. It is a set of all points
in space equidistant from a fixed point called the center.
Prisms-
Is a
polyhedron
with two
parallel,
congruent
faces called
bases that
are
polygons
Pyramids- is a 3D solid in which the base is a polygon, and the sides
are triangles which meet in one point called the vertex.
Cone- is a 3D solid in which the base is a circle.
