Traditional Composers
According to National Artist Dr. Ramon Santos,
“contemporary music in the Philippines refers to
compositions that have adopted ideas and elements from
20th century art music in the west, as well as the latest
trends and musical styles in the entertainment industry.”

The modern Filipino repertoire consists of musical pieces


that have been written in 20th century idioms that have
evolved out of such stylistic movements as impressionism,
expressionism, neo-classicism, as well as avant garde and
new music.
FRANCISCO BUENCAMINO

• He was born on November 5, 1883 in San Miguel


de Mayumo, Bulacan.
• He founded the Centro Escolar de Señoritas,
Conservatory of music as well as the Buencamino
Music Academy in 1930.
• Many of his piano work have become staples in
the Philippine repertoire ( Mayon, Larawan, and
Maligayang Bati)
• He also ventured into musical direction and
scoring for films, s well as composing several
zarzuelas and kundiman.
FRANCSICO
SANTIAGO
• Dr. Francisco Santiago was born on the 29th of
January, 1889 in Santa Maria, Bulacan, Philippines.
• Known as the “ Father of Kundiman” and belongs to
the “ Triumvirate of Filipino Composers”
• His famous works are; pakiusap,madaling araw, and
kundiman (anak dalita)
• He become the first Filipino director of the
conservatory of Music, University of the Philippines
• He finished his music specialization at the American
Conservatory of Music in Chicago where he obtained
his Doctorate Degree in 1924.
NICANOR
ABELARDO
• Nicanor Abelardo was born in San Miguel de
Mayumo, Bulacan to Valentin Abelardo and Placida
Santa Ana, on February 7, 1893.
• He was also a composer in the Romantic Style.
• Mutya ng Pasig, Nasaan ka Irog, Cavatina for
Violoncello and Magbalik Ka Hirang is his best
known compositions.
• The Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (main theater) of
the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the
Abelardo Hall of the UP College name after him.
ANTONIO MOLINA

• He was born on December 26, 1894,


in Quiapo, Manila.
• He was a product of both the Romantic and
Impressionist styles
• Known as the “Father of the Philippines
Impressionist Music”
• A characteristically impressionist work is his
piano composition Malikmata (transfiguration)
HILARION RUBIO
• He was a composer, music teacher, conductor and
clarenitist
• His name was closely identified with his works for
the orchestra; as a conductor for opera, ballet,
and dance recitals, and his music for movies.
• He was born in Bacoor, Cavite on October 21,
1902
• He composed his first composition entitledUnang
Katasconcert for the band.
Col. ANTONIO BUENAVENTURA
• Col. Antonino Ramirez Buenaventura was a
Filipino composer, conductor, and teacher.
• He promoted the Philippine music by extensively
using folk materials in his works
• He restored the Philippine Constabulary Band in
1945 which was considered “one of the best
military band in the world.
• He is a National Artist for Music
• He was born on May 4, 1904, Baliwag
RODOLFO CORNEJO
• He was the researcher and official composer of the
Philippine government in exile, under President
Manuel L. Quezon.
• He served as a pianist-director of a USO Concert unit
that entertained the Allied Forces during World War
II.
• He later become the soloist of several orchestras, and
eventually the musical director of the Sampaguita
and Vera-Perez movie companies
• He was born on the 15th of May, 1909
FELIPE P. de LEON SR.
• Felipe P. De Leon wrote piano compositions, hymns,
marches, art songs, chamber music, symphonic poems
and overtures, band music, school songs, orchestral
works, operas, kundimans and sarswelas (zarzuelas).
• Known as a nationalist composer, he sought to express
the Philippines' cultural identity through his
compositions.
• His two operas are; Noli Me Tangere, and El
Felibusterismo considered as his masterpiece
• He is a National Artist for Music
LUCIO SAN PEDRO
• he is remembered for his contribution to the development of
Filipino regional band music and for his well-known
compositions such as the Filipino lullaby, "Sa Ugoy ng Duyan"
and the symphonic poem, "Lahing Kayumanggi".
• He is known as a “Romantic Nationalist”
• Lucio Diestro San Pedro, Sr. was a Filipino composer and
teacher who was proclaimed a National Artist of the
Philippines for Music in 1991
• He was born on February 11, 1913, Angono Rizal
• He was declared National Artist for Music in 1991 and passed
away on March 31, 2002
ROSENDO SANTOS JR.
• He was a profile composer whose words include conserti,
sonatas, symphonies, symphonic poems, five operas in a
Philippine dialect, numerous band overtures and over 200
marches
• He also wrote 50 Masses in Latin and 20 in English
• According to National Commission for Culture and the
Arts, the musical style of Rosendo Santos Jr. is
predominantly characterized by neoclassicism.
• His famous song is Suyuan Sa Dagat (Romance by the Sea)
• He was born on September 3, 1922 in Caridad, Cavite City
in the Philippines
ALFREDO BUENAVENTURA
• He was formerly organist at the Metropolitan
Cathedral in Manila and among many other honours
received the Republican Cultural Heritage Awards in
1964 and 1972 and the Bonifacio Centennial Award.
• Alfredo Santos Buenaventura was born in Bulacan
on 14 October 1929. He is among the few
composers in the Philippines who composed five
full-length operas. His works have penetrated
territorial, racial and language barriers.
• Buenaventura's compositions are nationalist and
employ Romantic, impressionist and contemporary
styles
RYAN CAYABYAB
• He is a contemporary composer and conductor who
spans both and classical worlds with his pop music.
• Ballads, operas, zarzuelas, orchestral arrangements,
masses, psalms and choral compositions.
• Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika, Zarzuela Alikabok and
opera Spolarium with Libretto by Fides Cuyugan

• Jose Maceda’s musical style was profoundly


influenced when he encountered the music of
the indigenous tribes of Mindoro in 1953.
• He is a composer, internationally renowned
scholar in ethnomusicology.
• Considered as the first avant garde composer.
He also worked at a recording studio in Paris
in 1958 which specialized in musique concrete.

• He is the first Filipino composer to

the southern city of Dumaguete.

in the Philippines
• He is best known as a liturgical composer
whose body of works leams towards religious
figures and events
• His versatility as a pianist,composer, arranger,

• Ramon Santos compositional style features
chromaticism, music seria, and electronic components,
combined with indigenous Philippine music elements

• He was a Filipino composer and
conductor. He was a National Artist of
the Philippines for Music.
• He is one of Asia’s leading figures in
liturgical music, having composed
hundreds of liturgical pieces, mass
setting, hymns, and song for worship
• He founded the Asian Institute for
Liturgy and Music, a school for church
musicians
JOSEFINO TOLEDO
• Josefino Toledo is the founding music director of the
metro manila Community Orchestra, the UP Festival
Orchestra and the Cross wave symphony Orchestra
• He noted for conducting the premiere performances
of the works of Filipino composers and other Asian
composers; and has conducted concerts in Japan,
Indonesia, Australia, and China.
• He was the associate artistic director and conductor
of the first Asia-Europe Music Camp by the Asia-
Europe Foundation.
JONAS BAES
• Associate professor in composition and theory,
ethnomusicologist, cultural activist and a writer
• He is known for writing music utilizing unorthodox
musical instruments such as ; bean-pod
rattles,leaves, iron-nail chimes
• Among his honours are the CCP-LFC Composition
Prize (1980, for Awit ng Ibon) and three awards
from the chancellor, which earned him the Hall of
Fame Award for best research at the University of
the Philippines, entitled Gawad Chancellor para sa
Pinakamahusay na Mananaliksik (2001–03).

RESTIE UMALI
• He was a composer, teacher, and musical
arranger
• He arranged the Philippine national
anthem and the local classic Kataka-taka
for the Boston Pops Orchestra when it
performed for the Philippine
Independence Night in Boston in 1972.
• He wrote a total of more or less 120
movies theme songs, and composed
more than 250 scores for movies.
ANGEL PEÑA
• He was a classical and jazz composer, musical
arranger, and bass player.
• He is widely considered by modern Filipino Jazz
Musicians as “one of the founders of traditional
jazz in the Philippines”.
ERNANI CUENCO
• Was a composer, film scorer, musical director,
and music teacher
• He was a National Artist for Music in 1999
• His work embodied the Filipino sense of
musicality, with the classical sound of the
kundiman evident in many of his ballads.
GEORGE CANSECO
• George Masangkay Canseco was a Filipino composer and
former politician. He composed numerous popular Filipino
songs.
• Canseco wrote the classic "Kapantay ay Langit", a theme
from the award-winning Motion Picture sung by Amapola
• Canseco studied and graduated with a Liberal Arts degree
at University of the East in the Philippines. After
graduation, he worked for The Philippines Herald and The
Associated Press as a journalist.
• He also freelanced as a scriptwriter for hire in Manila.
Canseco was commissioned by former Philippines First
lady, Imelda Marcos, to compose the national tribute
hymn, "Ako ay Pilipino"
