Contemporary Philippine Music:


20th Century Traditional Composers.
• Philippine was colonized by the Spanish and the American for more than a
hundred years. Through this instance, western musical techniques manage their
way to get into the world of Philippine Music as many of our composers
combined these into traditional Philippine music, but still traditional Filipino
music remains evident. As the years passed, those techniques can be considered
as the one of those strongest foundations of Philippine Music.
Antonio Molina
- A product of both Romantic and Impressionist style.
- Father of Philippine Impressionist Music
- A characteristically impressionist work is his piano composition
MALIKMATA.

Nicanor Abelardo
• He is one of the Triumvirate of Filipino Composers

• His composition contains hazy tones, dissonance, and unusual chordial
combinations.

Alfredo Buenaventura
• He grew up in musical environment and drawn by his fascination with trumpets
and trombones.
• He was one of the 20 boy sopranos of the Times at Sto. Domingo Church.
• His first composition is ‘Danza’.
• Filipino composers of having five-full length operas.

Lucio San Pedro


• He was known as Romantic Nationalist.
• Incorporated Folk Elements with western forms and harmony which high tonal
melody and rich expressive harmonies and his composition.
• Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, a lullaby melody sung by his mother.
• Declared as National Artist for Music in 1991 and passed away on March 31,
2002

New Music Composers

Jose Maceda
• Born on January 31, 1917 in Manila.
• An ethnomusicologist, antropology, and musicology.
• Graduated with a musical diploma at the Academy of Music of Manila in 1935.

His works includes Ugma-Ugma, Pagsamba, Udlot-Udlot which commonly performed
as a communal ritual.

Lucrecia Kasilag
• Born on August 31, 1918 in San Fernando, La Union.
• She wrote more than 200 composition including folk songs, operas, and
orchestral work.
• Among her various compositions are Dularawan, Love Songs, Legend of the
Sarimanok, Ang Pamana, Philippine Son, jose, Sisa, Awit ng mga Awit Psalms,
and East meets Jazz Ethnika.
• Passed away on August 19, 2008

Jerry Dadap
• The first Filipino who conduct his own work at the Carnegie Recital Hall in New
York.
• He completed his bachelor’s degree in music at the Up conservatory of Music in
1964.
• He took his post-graduate diploma in composition at the Mannes College of
Music in NYC.

Among his composition includes The Passionate and the Wild, Mangamuyo I,
Mangamuyo II, The Redemption, Five Little Fingers, Tubig ng Buhay, Dakilang
Pagpapatawad, Andress Bonifacio, ang Dakilang Pagpapatawad, and Ang Pag-ibig ng
Diyos.

Fr. Manuel Maramba OSB


• He was born on July 04, 1936.
• He earned his music degree in piano at the UST conservatory of Music in the
1950s
• He served as a parish priest in Mexico
• He is a monk at Our Lady of Montserrat Abbey in Manila.
Among his opera are Aba! Sto. Nino, La Naval, and Lord Ukon Takayama, Ang
Sarswela sa San Salvador, and the Symphonies. Pugad Lawin and The Virgin of La
Naval.

Ramon Santos
• He was born on February 25, 1941 in Pasig.
• He obtained his master’s degree with the distinction from Indiana University in
1965 while his doctor’s degree from the State University of New York in 1972.
• His compositional style features chromaticism, music seria, and electronic
components combined with music elements of Indigenous Music.
• Among his works are Dind Ding Nga Diyawa, Klintang, Nabasag na Banga at iba
Pang Pinag-uogpong-ugpong na Pananalita sa Wikang Pilipino pa sa Labing anim
na Tinig, and L’BAD.
• From 1978-1988, he became the Dean of the UP College of Music

Francisco Feliciano
• He was born on February 19,1941 in Morong, Rizal.
• He acquired his Teacher Diploma in composition and conducting at the UP
conservatory of Music in 1946 and a Bachelor of Music Degree in music
composition in 1967.
• He obtained his music Degree composition in Hochschule der kunst in Berlin,
Germany.
• He has more than 30 major musical dramas and operatic work. His prize-
winning works include Pokpok Alimpako, Yerma, Sikhay sa Kabila ng Paalam
(Beyond the farewell) and Ashen Wings.
• At 73, he passed away on September 19, 2014 anfter a long battle with cancer.
Even after his death he is still considered as a great contributor when it comes to
liturgical music.

Josefino Toledo
• He studied his music at the University of the Philippines and took further studies
at the Conservatoire National de Musique in Paris.
• In 1985-1986, he finished his graduate studies in composition at the Cleveland
Institute of Music in Ohio, USA under the grant from the Asian Cultural Council.
• Toledo ha a new 11 minute work titled Hoy! Bata… (Hey Kid)
• His ispiration are ‘Bagbagto’ of Cordilleras, ‘Ili-Ili Tulog Anay’ From Visayas, ‘Sa
Duyan” from Mindanoa, and ‘Tong Tong Tong Pakitong Kitong’ from the tagalog
regions.
Jonas Baes
• He was born on Laguna in 1961.
• He enrolled at UP College of Music, major in composition in 1977, and finished a
Bachelor’s degree in 2004 with a dissertation on the politics of appropriating
indigenous Philippine Music.
• Among his major compositions are Patangis Buwaya, Banwa, Wala, Aguyoy,
Daluy, and Basbasan

Levi Celerio
• Prolific lyricist
• National artist for music and literature in 1997.
• He had written the lyrics for over 4000 songs in his lifetime.
• Produced kundiman and filipino love songs
• Composer that create music using leaf-blown music.

Miguel “mike” G. Velarde Jr.


• Composer, conductor, movie actor, and musical director
• Became song editor for the Philippine free press.
• Also became an editor literary song movie magazine
• His composition “lukang tagumpay” which received the famas for best picture
1960.

Santiago suarez
• Attende the conservatory of music, university of the Philippines (up) and the
ateneo de manila Intramuros.

• Suarez composition is a mixture of the soulful and kundiman style and the lively
strain on the countryside.

• His early exposure to music was through his father who taught him to play violin.

the boston pops orchestra when it performed for the Philippine independence.

Angel Matias Pena


• One of the founders of traditional jazz in the philippines.
• Pena wrote his first original jazz composition just before World War II began.
• He wrote kundiman song for the young women he would be courting.

Ernani Cuenco
• Conferred national artist award for music in 1999.
• His work embody a filipino sense of musicality as expressed in the classical sound
of kundiman.
• Cuenco was sent as a delegate to the international music conference in Tokyo,
Japan.

George Canseco
• He work for the Philippines herald at the associated press as journalist.

• He composed songs of the country’s top popular singer such as Sharon cuneta,
basil valdez, regine velasquez, zsa zsa padilla, pilita corales, martin Nievera, and
kuh Ledesma.

Leopoldo S. Silos Sr.


• Was a composer, singer, and musical arranger.

• He composed and recorded romantically and soulful songs.
