What Is a Comparative Adjective?
A comparative adjective is used to compare one person, action, thing or state to
another. It adds the suffix -er to the original adjective.
e.g. brighter
e.g. warm
The weather is warmer today than yesterday.
e.g. happy
The boy is happier than the girl.
e.g. big
My car is bigger than yours.
What Is a Comparative Adjective?
• Add the suffix ‘-er’ to these adjectives and then put them in a sentence.
E.g. small
The mouse was smaller than the elephant.

hotter longer
long wet
wetter
shiny
shinier light
lighter brighter
bright
E.g. quietest
e.g. quick
The girl is the quickest of them all.
e.g. juicy
The orange is the juiciest of the fruits.
e.g. hot

What Is a Superlative Adjective?
e.g. cold
It was the coldest day in January so far.

thin shortest
short driest

Words that end in a ‘y’ Double consonants Words that end in an ‘e’
Two or more syllable Words that end in one Words that end in an ‘e’
