LACTOSE INTOLRANCE

WHAT IS LACTOSE INTOLRANCE ?

• Lactose intolerance is when your body can't

break down or digest lactose. Lactose is a
sugar found in milk and milk products.
• Lactose intolerance happens when your
small intestine does not make enough of a
digestive enzyme called lactase.
• Some times small intestine stop making lactase after
short-term illness such as stomach flu or as a life long
disease such as cystic fibroses . or sometimes small
intestine stops making lactase after surgery to remove a
part of small intestine. In these cases the problem can
be either permanent or temporary.
• In rare cases, newborns are lactose -intolrant. A
person born with lactose intolerance cannot eat or
drink anything with lactose
Symptoms:

•Nausea.
•Bloating.
•Gas.
•Belly (abdominal) cramps and pain.
•Diarrhea.
How will I know if a food has lactose?

• Lactose is found in milk and all the products made

with milk , such as
1. Ice cream
2. Butter
3. Cheese
4. Cream
5. Cottage cheese
6. yogurt
WORLD WIDE POPULATION THAT HAVE
PRIMARY LACTOSE DEFICIENCY
Experts estimate that about 68 percent of the world's
population has lactose malabsorption. Lactose
malabsorption is more common in some parts of the
world than in others. In Africa and Asia, most people
have lactose malabsorption.
• There are three main types of lactose intolerance:
1. Primary lactose intolerance:
This is the most common type and occurs when the body
naturally produces less lactase with age. Many people begin
to experience symptoms of lactose intolerance in late
childhood or adulthood. Primary lactose intolerance is more
prevalent in certain ethnic groups, such as people of African,
Asian, Hispanic, or Native American descent.
Secondary lactose intolerance: This type of lactose
intolerance occurs as a result of injury to the small
intestine, such as from infections, celiac disease, or
other digestive disorders. In these cases, the
reduced production of lactase is temporary and
typically improves once the underlying cause is
treated.
3.Congenital lactase deficiency:
This is a rare genetic condition in which individuals
are born with little or no lactase enzyme activity.
Symptoms of lactose intolerance may appear shortly
after birth when an infant is fed milk containing
lactose.
