ROMANTIC VOCAL MUSIC


OBJECTIVES

 Describe the lives of the Romantic vocal music composers


 Enumerate the renowned works of the Romantic vocal music
composers; and
 Identify significant style of each of the Romantic vocal music
composer.
FRANZ SCHUBERT

 He is considered as the last of the classical composer and the


first of the Romantic ones. His music is known for its melody
and harmony.
 He received a thorough musical education and had a
scholarship to a boarding school. Although he never became
wealthy, his compositions gained much popularity and
recognition for bridging the gap between classical and
romantic compositions.
GIUSEPPE VERDI

 He was an Italian composer known for his operas during the


Romantic Period. He was famous for creating melody and
using theatrical effects intensively.
 He exhibited an inclination to music at a young age. He
started his musical education in Busseto, where he studied
composition.
 His two operas in 1842 and 1843, Nabucco and I Lombardi
alla Prima Crociata. These operas helped him earn success.
GIACOMO PUCCINI

 He was an Italian composer famous for his opera works that


exhibited realism.
 He belonged to a musical family that produced five
consecutive generations of organists to the Cathedral of San
Martino in Lucca, Italy. His organist father died, when he was
5 years old, his coming age was greatly anticipated, being the
next in line for the musical position in the church.
 However he showed a great disinterest in music when he was
young. He was regarded as a poor student in music. The
people thought that it marked the end of the Puccini’s
musical legacy; however, his mother Albina continued to
subsidizing his education.
RICHARD WAGNER
 He was a German dramatic composer and theorist best known
for creating complicated epic operas. His works has a
revolutionary influence on the courses of western music.
 His first symphony was composed in 1833. he was inspired by
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony which he regarded as his “mystic
source of highest ecstasy”.
 He joined the Wurzburg Theater as a chorus master and wrote
the test and music of his first opera Die Feen (The Fairies).
However, this opera was not performed onstage.
