OUR MISSION
Connect the ecosystem
Bring together all parties in the supply chain - including shippers, freight forwarders,
intermodal operators, ports and terminals, ocean carriers, customs and other government
authorities, and others - onto a blockchain-based platform with a secure permission and
identity framework.
Spur innovation
Lay the foundation for ongoing improvement and innovation through an open, publicly -

MARKETPLACE
An open applications and services marketplace allows both TradeLens and third parties to publish
fit-for-purpose services atop the TradeLens platform, fostering supply chain innovation and value
creation.
PLATFORM
The TradeLens Platform is accessible via an open API and brings together the ecosystem through
a set of open standards. Powered by Hyperledger Fabric blockchain technology and IBM Cloud,
the platform enables the industry to share information and collaborate securely.
ECOSYSTEM
The foundation of TradeLens is its business network — shippers, freight forwarders, ports and
terminals, ocean carriers, intermodal operators, government authorities, customs brokers and
more. Each entity shares information that can be tracked, stored and actioned across the platform
throughout a shipment’s journey.

PLATFORM
Powered by IBM Cloud and IBM Blockchain, the TradeLens Platform provides every entity involved in global trade with the digital tools to
share information and collaborate securely. Unlike open, anonymous blockchains like those used for cryptocurrencies, on the TradeLens
blockchain, members are known based on cryptographic identities and "trust anchors" operate blockchain nodes.
To date, TradeLens ecosystem members have securely published over 2.2 billion shipment events and 20 million documents to the TradeLens
Platform, helping to reduce friction and simplify the process of trade.

Maintaining visibility when changes to shipments occur is challenging. Updated ETAs from transportation providers only focus on a
single point in the transportation journey and are often built on narrow logic, not on the actual plan for the transport. Split bookings
cause confusion. These issues limit the full picture of changes that can have a profound impact across multiple downstream transport
providers.
TradeLens Core collects data from a myriad of sources, gives you access to data directly from the source, proactively updates the
transport plan when changes occur, and addresses the real-world complexities such as split bookings and multi-segment transport

The bill of lading (BL) is used on as many as 40% of containerized shipments and are a vital instrument in
international trade, serving as receipt of cargo, evidence of a contract of carriage, and title.
But the manual, paper-based processes used today are ripe with inefficiencies and risk. The issuance, transfer, and
surrender of the BL require the handling and physical transfer of documents by multiple parties at origin and

don’t have clear timings for container unloading, customs and terminal release. They know the information
exists, but it is not shared with them and their transport providers effectively.
Sitting at a keyboard, hitting refresh on a terminal website all day isn’t an effective way to
run a business.
TradeLens notifications are designed to immediately alert the importer and their transport providers
when a container is available for pickup from the import terminal.
Because TradeLens notifications are triggered by data direct from carriers, customs and terminals in
near real-time, importers can streamline their transport planning activities, reducing wasted effort and
improving cost efficiencies.

COORDINATE LAST-MILE
DELIVERIES PROACTIVELY
WITH LOGISTICS PARTNERS
Once an importer’s shipment is ashore and moving, the containers are often invisible to them.
Without location or progress data shared from their providers, it is nearly impossible for importers to
manage schedules, coordinate last-mile delivery and ensure their cargo hits its arrival window.
When an importer joins TradeLens, they can bring their logistics partners onto the platform with
them.
Each of the importer’s partners can share and access a shipment’s last-mile data, enabling everyone to
make proactive decisions and tightly coordinate multiple transport parties from the same source of
truth.

DEMURRAGE CHARGES
Once a shipment has been delivered, an importer may find themselves liable for charges due to the late
return of empty containers. As there is no data showing where the containers went, there is no way to tell
why they were late or if they were dropped in the wrong place.
All the importer can do is contest the invoice and try to lower the cost of a mistake that was not their
fault.
TradeLens dashboards continually calculate estimated D&D charges in near real-time based on
their container’s actual movements.
Importers can spot unexpected costs and identify which invoices to contest and which to expedited

ETAs.
This lack of visibility denies importers the opportunities to make business-critical decisions like

transport operations.
With TradeLens, importers can find any shipment with a changed transport plan or a new ETA with a

provider and potentially the suppliers at origin.
But coordinating this process can be messy, with various modes of communication and different
systems across all the parties involved. When things go wrong , it can lead to a “he said, she said”
conflict. And even when things go right, there are inherent delays and extra effort required to ensure
shipping windows are met.
When an exporter joins TradeLens, setting up secure communications with logistics partners is as simple
as selecting them from a menu.
Because each partner an exporter adds to TradeLens can share and access the shipment’s transport
data, everyone knows where the containers are and where they will be, so they can make proactive

STREAMLINE PLANNING
WITH TRANSPORT EVENT
NOTIFICATIONS
Due to limited container availability at origin depots, it can be challenging for truckers to efficiently
coordinate the pick-up of empty containers to take to the exporter’s warehouse for stuffing.
Today, the exporter and their trucker may not be notified when empty containers are available for
pick-up. As a result, increased communication workloads are required with the trucker, who in turn is
unable to efficiently optimize their scheduling and it’s likely going to end up with additional waiting-
time costs.
TradeLens Notifications are triggered by events that come directly from carriers, terminals and other
entities in near real-time, so the exporter and their transport providers can be immediately alerted to
critical changes to the transport plan, including empty containers available for pick up and when those
containers are loaded on board.
TradeLens Notifications keep exporters informed of changes, so they can manage customer expectations,
streamline their transport planning activities and actively handle unforeseen delays.

If an exporter is responsible for the destination charges as part of their incoterms, they may not have a

Estimating these fees can be challenging and requires up-to-date information from the destination
agent; one missed overnight email could lead to two days’ wait for an update.
TradeLens helps exporters track their containers’ movements and milestones with data shared to the

DATA MODEL
SHIPMENT
The TradeLens platform manages the sharing of data associated with three interrelated “objects” as
defined by the UN-CEFACT Supply Chain Reference Data Model standard: Shipments,
Consignments, and Transport Equipment. SELLER BUYER

CONSIGNMENT 1

A separately identifiable collection of goods (available to be) transported together from a seller
to a buyer, including the shipping arrangements and movement of products including despatch
and delivery, regardless of the modes of transport or the contracting/subcontracting WAREHOUSE PORT PORT WAREHOUSE
relationships.
Consignment
Separately identifiable collection of goods transported together from one consignor to one
consignee via one or more modes of transport as specified in one single transport contract. CONSIGNMENT 2

Transport Equipment
The physical equipment used to hold, protect, or secure cargo for logistics purposes. Currently,
containers are supported as Transport Equipment in TradeLens. Since some types of transport
equipment are re-used, Transport Equipment in TradeLens is further constrained to an instance of
the usage of a piece of equipment within the context of a shipment or a set of consignments relating
to the end-to-end transportation of a shipment.
