CONCEPT OF

FRACTIONS
A fraction is a "part" of a
"whole".
You can recognize a fraction by
the slash or a fraction bar or a
bar line that is written between
the two numbers.
For example:
*There are a total of 5 children.

3 out of 5 are girls. So, the fraction of


girls is three-fifths ( 3⁄5 or ).

2 out of 5 are boys. So, the fraction of


boys is two-fifths ( 2⁄5 or ).
If is one whole, then the
shaded portion of is
of a whole.

In this example, the 3 is the numerator


describing the shaded part and the 4 is
the denominator telling how many equal
parts the whole has been divided into.

Proper Fractions 5
Fractions whose numerators are less
than the denominators are called proper
fractions.

Improper Fractions

15/4, 9/9, 20/13, 12/12, 13/11, 14/11, 17/17
are the examples of improper fractions.

The top number (numerator) is greater


than or equal to the bottom number
(denominator).
Mixed Number
A combination of a fraction and a
whole number is called a
mixed number.

Similar (Like) fractions are fractions


with same denominators.
