Simple machines
do have only limited number of moving parts and
do not require human intervention/operation in normal operation mode.

In almost all cases the safety is ensured by fixed guards.

Additional warning labels may be present to point to the moving part
behind the guard.

Examples of simple machines are:

• Pumps,
• compressors,
• vacuum pumps,
• fans,
• stirrers,
• mills, sieves,
• rotary valves,
• belt conveyers,
• bucket conveyer.

The assessment on simple machines is clarified in Annex 2.

Complexe machines
machines consisting of several machines working as whole (many times an assembly) or
machines that executes complex operation requiring many moving parts
and sometimes requiring frequent human intervention for tasks like
inspection, cleaning, adjustments, removal, replacement (e.g. bag packing machine)

Assembly is a composition of single machines

(complete or non complete and many times complex by themselves )
working together as one unit having at least a common control.
(e.g. a packaging line consisting of a bagging machine, conveyers, seal wrapper and palletizers).
