INTRODUCTION
Aging of asphalt binder during construction and service life of pavement can result in a stiffer
binder that can be susceptible to fatigue cracking at intermediate temperatures.

Several factors can accelerate the aging of asphalt mixes, such as type of binder, air voids, binder
content, and climatic conditions.

However, the type of polymer-modified binder and its dosage can have a major influence on the
aging resistance of asphalt mixes.

It is understood that polymer-modified binder (PMB) can have good aging resistance, and will
not cause early cracking due to the stiffening of the binder.
OBJECTIVE
Evaluate the effect of mix aging conditions on fatigue cracking parameters of asphalt
binder and mixes.

Validate binder fatigue parameters by correlating fatigue response of aged asphalt

binders with the cracking index of aged mixes.

This study were to investigate the effect of long-term laboratory aging on rheological
properties and cracking resistance of polymer-modified asphalt binders at intermediate
and low temperature range, and to analyze different evaluation indexes..

Materials and Methodology
Materials
For Laboratory Produce mix-
a)- Granite-type aggregates conforming to Bituminous Concrete Grade II (BC-II) with 13.2-mm
nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS)
b)- Two highly modified asphalt (HiMA) binders from two different sources (HiMA-T, HiMA-B)

For Plant Produced mix-

a)- Two plant produced mixes (Mix-VS and Mix-VR) prepared with PMB were collected from the hot

Fatigue Cracking Resistance of Mixes Using IDEAL-CT

 To determine the cracking resistance of long-term-aged asphalt mixes using both

compacted mix aging and loose mix aging techniques in accordance with ASTM
D8225-19.
 Samples having 150-mm diameter and 65-mm height with 7% air void were
compacted using SGC.
 Cracking tolerance index vary from 0 to 100.

Superpave Fatigue Factor (|G*| · sin δ)
 The |G*| · sin δ value was determined on CMA and LMA aged binders at 1% strain and 10 rad/s
angular frequency with 2-mm gap using 8-mm-diameter parallel plates geometry in DSR.
 The Superpave fatigue factor is a measure ability of an asphalt mixture to resist fatigue cracking
under repeated loading of traffic .
 A higher fatigue factor indicates better resistance to fatigue cracking.

Binder Yield Energy Test

 The BYET is measure by Dynamic shear Rheometer (DSR) test.
 To evaluate the viscoelastic property of bitumen and ability to resist deformation and flow under
varying conditions of temperature and stress.

Linear Amplitude Sweep Test
 LAS test is used to evaluate the resistance of asphalt mix to fatigue cracking.
 A cylindrical specimen of the asphalt mix is loaded in a testing machine which applies
a sinusoidal loading pattern at varying strain amplitude but constant loading
frequency.

Conclusions/interpretation

For all PMB types, different aging conditions had a distinct impact on
the cracking resistance of polymer-modified binder, as well as mixes.
Change in aging condition from CMA to LMA resulted in a decrease in
CT index value that ranged from 8% (Mix-VS) to 44% (Mix-VR).

• Results of both the mix cracking test and binder fatigue analysis
indicated that PMB with higher polymer content had better cracking
resistance and was found to be less sensitive to aging.

• Contrary to the findings of previous studies, a fairly good correlation

was found between the Superpave fatigue factor, |G| · sin δ, and the
mix cracking results.

• BYET ER showed the highest correlation with mix cracking results

followed by LAS fatigue life and Superpave fatigue factor. A very poor
correlation was observed between the BYET YE of the binder and the
CTindex of mixes.
Conclusions/interpretation

• For a loose mix aged binder, because of its higher stiffness, these
threshold values were observed to be slightly on the lower side.

• These values may be utilized in selecting an appropriate binder during

the mix design or material testing stage of the QC/QA process.

• An excellent exponential relationship was observed between binder

fatigue parameters and the post peak slope (|m75| of the IDEAL-CT
force–displacement curve, indicating that binder fatigue parameters
are also capable of predicting the crack propagation behavior of
asphalt mixes
