Modal verbs

Should/shouldn’t
• Used to give advice (Not an obligation).
• Use infinitive verb after «Should/shouldn’t»
• It doesn’t change with the person.

Examples:
You should eat vegetables (They are good for you)

You shouldn’t eat fried chicken every day (It is bad for you)
Complete with should or shouldn’t:

• Peter has fever. He should go to the doctor.


• Peter __________ go to school.
• He _________ drink water.
• He ___________ play football.
ANSWERS

Must/mustn’t
• Used for moral obligations (deberes).
• Use infinitive verb after must or mustn’t.
• Must doesn’t change with different subjects.

• Example:
• You must make your bed every day.

• Susan mustn’t speak when the teacher talks.


Complete with must or mustn’t

• In the classroom you mustn’t run because you can have an accident.
• In the classroom you ________ raise your hand to speak.

Have to/don’t have to
• Used to talk about obligations.
• Don’t have to: Not necessary
• I, you, we, they have to… / He, she, it has to…
• I, you, we, they don’t have to… / He, she, it doesn’t have to…

Examples:
You have to study English at school. (It is an obligation)
You don’t have to do sports every day. (It is not necessary)
Susan has to study History for tomorrow, but she doesn’t have to study all
night.
