Table tennis, also known as ping-pong


and whiff-whaff, is a sport in which two
or four players hit a lightweight ball,
also known as the ping-pong ball, back
and forth across a table using small
rackets. The game takes place on a
hard table divided by a net.

History
1890's- table tennis started as a parlor
game in Europe but did not stay long and
died down
1920's- it became popular again and clubs
were formed all over the world
1988- The game was added in the Olympic
Games Program in Seoul

• Ping-Pong was the original name copyrighted by Parker


Brothers

• The name "ping pong" is still used in certain parts of the


world, particularly in the USA, probably because it was
promoted extensively in the early 1900s by the equipment
manufacturers who owned the trademark, and therefore it
became ingrained in people’s minds - just as any other
product which is widely advertised and promoted.

WHO INVENTED THE GAME TABLE TENNIS?

• An English Patent (number 11,037) was filed on 15 July 1890


when David Foster of England introduced the first action
game of tennis on a table in 1890.
• Only one example is known to have survived and it's now on
display in the ITTF Museum.
• Foster's Parlor Table Games was a compendium of table
versions of Cricket, Football and Lawn Tennis.
• The table tennis game featured elegant strung rackets, a 30mm
cloth covered rubber ball, a small wooden perimeter fence and
elaborate side nets to catch stray balls.

Terminologies in Table Tennis


Definition of Terms
1. Stroke- is any shot used in the game, including the
serve
2. Serve- begins with the ball being tossed from the
palm of the hand and struck by the racket
3. Server- is the player due to strike the ball in a rally
4. Receiver- is the player due to strike the ball first in
a rally
5. Match- is a two out of three contest

6. Block- is a quick, off the bounce return of an


aggressive drive done by holding the racket in the
ball's path
7. Default- is a disqualification for a match for any
reason
8. Footwork- is a movement to make a shot
9. Rally- is hitting of the ball back and forth
commencing with a serve and ending when a point
is won

10.Forehand- is any shot done with a racket to the right of


the elbow for a right hander, to the left for a left hander.
11.Backhand- is a shot done with the racket to the left of
the left elbow for a right-hander, to the right for a left
hander.

14.Free Hand- is the hand not carrying the racket
15.Umpire- the official who keeps the score and enforces
rules during a match
