The period of American colonialization of the Philippines was 48


years. It began with the cession of the Philippines to the U.S. by
Spain in 1898 and lasted until the U.S. recognition of the Philippine
independence in 1946.

American-Made Redware Tin-Glazed Pieces

Of the American pottery made during the 17 th Importers brough tin-glazed earthenware
and 18th centuries, most of it is consisted of pieces, called “delft”. These pieces were
locally crafted created earthenware – also made from earthenware clay with a
called redware – made from clay with a dense tin glaze that covered the items
high iron content that gave the items a all over. Delft pieces, aw with white salt

Porcelain Pottery
Porcelain pottery was made from a nonabsorbent, hard
white clay found only in China at that time.
Translucent white glaze overlaid by an Asian inspired
hand-painted designs usually in a cobalt-blue, but
sometimes including reds, yellows, greens and deeper
blues.

• Philippine Literature during the American Colonial was influenced by two factors, first of which is,
education. With the Americans providing free education, many were given the chance to study and
English was used as the language of instruction.
• With some newspaper having a space for literary pieces, writers were given the chance to show and
prove the true talent of the Filipinos. Some of these newspapers were :
• Muling Pagsilang (1903)
• Ang Kaluwasan (1902)
• Makinaugalingon (1913)
• Nueva Era (1908)
• The best known magazines that capitalized on short stories and poems were Liwayway (1922),
Hiligaynon (1934) and Bannawag (1934).
• The literary genres that flourished during the American Period were poetry, sarswela, short story,
and the novel. Poetry was written in the three languages – Filipino, Spanish, English, and in the
different dialects.
