ESTIMATION

OF
PRODUCT
WHAT IS AN ESTIMATE?
An estimate is a guess of the answer
when an exact value is not possible or is not
needed.
Estimation is easy to use. If we go to a
supermarket, we know the items we want
to buy, but we may not know the exact
prices of those items; so, we estimate the
amount of money we need to bring.
To estimate products:
1.Round the factors to the highest place value;
2.Multiply the nonzero digits in the factors;
and
3.Add the number of zeroes in the factors.
EXAMPLES
Example 1:
Estimate the product of 28 and 12.
Step 1: Round off each factor to highest place value.
28 is rounded to 30
12 is rounded to 10
Step 2: Multiply the rounded off factors.
30 x 10 = 300

The estimated product is 300.

The actual product is 336.
Example 2:
Estimate the product of 32 and 16.
Step 1: Round off each factor to highest place value.
32= _____
16= _____
Step 2: Multiply the rounded off factors.
_____ x _____ = _____

The estimated product is _____.

The actual product is _____.

_____ x _____ = _____

The estimated product is _____.

The actual product is _____.
Example 4:

498= _____
5= _____
Step 2: Multiply the rounded off factors.
_____ x _____ = _____

The estimated product is _____.
