Scrooge is shown to walk “despairingly” around the room. Embedded

“Clapping her tiny hands, and bending down to laugh”. This shows that Fan is a happy
and playful child.

The schoolhouse was not a happy or welcoming place. The evidence for this is
“melancholy, bare room.”

The use of adjectives such as “melancholy”, “despondent”, and “empty” create an

image of an unhappy and lonely environment for a young boy.

The fact that Scrooge seems “uneasy” when thinking about Fan’s child shows us
that he is questioning his behaviour towards Fred, her son.

Dickens uses the quotation “heart filled with gladness” in stave two. This shows
that Scrooge is starting to change his ways.
