Solving Problems

Involving Parameters
to Be Tested
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learner should be able to

● properly define a parameter;

● correctly give examples of parameters; and

● correctly determine the parameters given a real-life

situation.
Essential Questions

● How will you determine whether a sample is large enough

with respect to the population size?

● Why can’t we get the exact value of most parameters?

Warm Up!

Before we start with the lesson, let us watch a short video on

parameters and statistics.

Guide Questions

● What is a population? What is a sample?

● What do you remember about parameters? How about

statistics?

● Why do we need samples from a population?

● Why can’t we get data from the whole population?

Learn about It!

1 Parameter
characteristic or measure of a population

The parameter is also referred to as the true or actual value.

Learn about It!

Example:

Let’s say a medical researcher wants to determine the mean

number of patients in an emergency room each day. In this
case, the parameter is the population daily mean number of
patients in the emergency room.
Try It!

Example 1:
The hypotheses of a test are as follows:

The population mean number of hours students spend

studying after school is at most 2.5 hours. ()

The population mean number of hours students spend

studying after school is greater than 2.5 hours. ()

What is the parameter?

Try It!

Solution:

The parameter is the population mean number of hours

students spend studying after school.
Try It!

Example 2: A store owner wants to know if the daily average

number of customers in the clothing shop is greater than
246. What is the parameter?
Try It!

Solution:

The parameter is the population mean number of customers

in the clothing shop per day.
Try It!

Example 3: A gym instructor wants to test if the weights of

his students are reduced after an exercise program. Before
the exercise program, the average weight of his students was
145 lbs. What is the parameter?
Try It!

Solution:

The parameter is the population mean weight of the gym

instructor’s students after the exercise program.
Let’s Practice!

Individual Practice:

1. The hypotheses of a study are as follows:

: The population mean typing speed of an average

professional typist is 75 words per minute. (H0: μ = 75)

: The population mean typing speed of an average

professional typist is not 75 words per minute. (HA: μ ≠ 75)

What is the parameter?

Let’s Practice!

Individual Practice:

2. A department head wants to test the claim that the daily

average water intake of each employee per day is greater
than 1.3 liters. What is the parameter?

3. The owner of Brews Coffee Shop believes that an average

of 500 customers per day visit their shop. Earlier in the
month, a competitor opened another coffee shop nearby.
The owner of Brews Coffee Shop would like to test whether
there is a decrease in the number of customers visiting their
shop daily. What is the parameter?
Let’s Practice!

Group Practice: To be done in pairs

A nutritionist wants to determine the mean amount of sugar

that adults consume per day. From a random sample of 120
adults, the nutritionist got a mean of 30 grams.

a. What is the parameter?

b. Name the given statistics.
Let’s Practice!

Group Practice: To be done in pairs

A null hypothesis states that “The average grade of students

in ABC Senior High School is 89.”

a. What is the parameter in the study?

b. What should be the alternative hypothesis?
Key Points

Parameter
1 characteristic or measure of a population
