LESSON

VITAL SIGNS

The Vital Signs

- are the most important medical signs that show the condition of the body’s
vital functions.

http://amipsyche.com/what-are-your-vital-signs/

Purpose of Measuring the Vital Signs

• Assess the general condition of the client.

• Serves as a guide for meeting the needs of the client.
• Aids the massage therapist on how to deal with her client.
• Avoid possible injury and complications to the client.

The four vital signs routinely checked by health care providers include the following:

• Body temperature
• Pulse rate
• Respiration rate
• Blood pressure- not a vital sign but is often measured along with the vital
signs.
How to get the temperature of the client:
1. Sanitize the thermometer with an antiseptic solution.
2. Turn on the digital thermometer.
3. Place the thermometer in the client's armpit.
5. Wait for 2 to 3 minutes until you hear the beep sound.
6. Take the thermometer from the client’s axilla or armpit and note the reading
7. Tell the client of the reading and its significance.
8. Disinfect the thermometer with an antiseptic solution.

Normal Body Temperature – 36.5 – 37.3 degrees centigrade ( 97.8 – 99.1 degrees Fahrenheit)
Average 98 .6 ˚F ( 37 ˚C )
Hypothermia—drop of body temperature
Hyperthermia – low -grade fever
Hyperpyrexia—high body temperature or high fever
Pyrexia—abnormal elevation of body temperature
How to count the pulse rate of the client:

1. At the wrist, use the index and middle finger, press the inner wrist firmly but
gently over the arteries until you feel the pulse.

2. At the neck, press lightly on the side of the neck just below the jawbone.
3. Begin counting the pulsation within a minute or for 30 seconds then multiply
by two to calculate beats per minute.
4. Inform the client regarding the results and their significance.

Normal Pulse Rate for

Adult—60 to 100 beats
per minute.

How to count the respiratory rate of your client?
• Observe the breathing of your client with your palm on the chest of your client.
• The rate is measured by counting how many times the chest rises.
• One complete breath comprises one inhalation when the chest rises, and one
exhalation when the chest falls.
• Count the number of breaths for a minute or 30 seconds and multiply that
number by two.

The Normal Respiratory rate for an adult

is 12 – 18 breaths per minute.

What is blood pressure?

-- the force of the blood causing contraction and relaxation of the heart.
Systolic pressure—the pressure when the heart constricts and pumps blood through
the body.
Diastolic pressure—the pressure when the heart is resting.

Categories of blood pressure:

• Normal blood pressure – 120 over 80

• Elevated blood pressure—120- 129 over 80
• Stage 1—high blood pressure --130-139 over 80-89
• Stage 2—high blood pressure --140 over 90 or higher
