GRADE 1O
Pronouns
As Greg MacMillan said, grammar is
important because it provides information
that helps the reader's comprehension. It is
the structure that conveys precise meaning
from the writer to the audience. If you
eliminate grammatical errors from your
writing, you reward your readers with clear
communication.

Reflexive Pronouns
A reflexive pronoun refers or reflects back to the subject of the
sentence, indicating that the same person or thing is involved. A
reflexive pronoun always adds information to a sentence.

Examples:
Paolo uses a stopwatch to time himself on the track.
We imagined ourselves dancing in a forest glade.
Reflexive Pronouns
Reflexive pronouns can be used as direct objects or indirect
objects. A direct object, of course, is when the subject does something
to itself or the receiver of the action.

Examples:
Michael hurt himself on the job.
Direct Object
Jillian introduced herself to her new puppy.
Reflexive Pronouns
And you can use a reflexive pronoun as an indirect object as well.

Examples:
Indirect Object
She pours herself another cup of tea.

He gave himself motivation.

Reflexive Pronouns
You should also use a reflexive pronoun after the preposition “by” when
you are trying to show that someone is doing something alone.

Examples: Object of the Preposition

The goat made it out of the pen by itself.

The children made Sunday morning breakfast all by themselves.

Intensive Pronouns
An Intensive pronoun adds emphasis to another noun or pronoun in the
same sentence. An intensive pronoun does not add information to a sentence. If
the intensive pronoun is left out, the sentence still has the same meaning. Often,
but not always, an intensive pronoun comes immediately after its antecedent.

Examples:
He himself delivered the flowers.
He delivered the flowers himself.
You must sign the application yourself.
You yourself must sign the application.
Intensive Pronouns
The first grammatical function performed by the intensive pronoun is the
appositive. Appositives are words, phrases, and clauses that support another
word, phrase, or clause by describing or modifying the other word, phrase,
or clause. For example:
• I myself cooked the entire Thanksgiving meal.
• Edie knew that she herself could make a positive impact on the world.
• The presidents themselves made the big announcement.
