Classifying
Animals
animals can be sorted into
two main groups:
A vertebrate is an animal with a backbone. A backbone is a long
column of bones which supports the body and protects the spinal
cord.
Vertebrate include mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians

These animals are all vertebrate…

…because they all have a back bone

Look at these animals. Do you think they have a skeleton? Would you describe them
as vertebrate or invertebrate?
An invertebrate is an animal without a backbone. They have no internal skeleton and normally have soft, flexible
bodies. Some have a hard outer skeleton (an exoskeleton) which protects them. Types of invertebrate include
insects, crustaceans, echinoderms, worms, arachnids, molluscs and cnidaria.

These animals are all invertebrate because

they do not have a backbone.

There are many types of invertebrate

What is an insect?
насекомое
An insect is an invertebrate.
Insects have a hard outer casing
which protects the soft body inside.
The body of an insect is split into
three sections: head, thorax and
abdomen.
Insects have antennae and usually
have 3 pairs of legs. They also
sometimes have wings.
Ex: ants, bees and grasshoppers etc

6
What is a crustacean?
ракообразное
A crustacean is an invertebrate.
Crustaceans have a hard outer
shell which protects the soft
inner body. The body is made
up of two parts which
sometimes look like they are
fused together.
Crustaceans have more than 3
pairs of legs and many will have
claws (когти) at the end of the
first set of legs.
Ex: crabs, prawns and shrimps

7
What is an echinoderm?
иглокожие
An echinoderm is an invertebrate.
Echinoderms only live in water and
have a hard spiny covering or skin.
Their bodies also have radial
symmetry with five or more arms or
legs.
An echinoderm can grow back part of
its body if it becomes damaged.
Ex: sea urchins and starfish

8
What is a myriapod?
многоножки

An myriapod is an invertebrate.
Myriapods have long segmented
bodies. They have 1 or 2 pairs of legs
on each segment.

9
What is an arachnids?
паукообразные

All arachnids have eight legs and they

do not have antennae. Their bodies
are made up of two parts the
cephalothorax (where the head is
found) and the abdomen.
They also have a tough exoskeleton
Ex: spider, scorpion

10
What is a mollusc?
моллюск

Molluscs have muscular bodies and

no legs, but they may have tentacles.
Molluscs often have a shell, inside or
outside their body. Some species,
such as slugs and snails, live on land.
Others, like squids, octopuses and
many shellfish, live underwater.

11
What is a worm?
червь

These animals have no legs, and long

bodies. They may be flat, round or
segmented (with lots of rings or
sections to their body). Some types
have hooks and suckers. Examples
are flukes, tapeworms, and
earthworms..

12
What is a cnidaria?
книдария

This group of animals all live in the sea.

They include jellyfish, sea anemones,
and coral. They have no legs, and
stinging tentacles around their
mouths.
