OBJECTIVES

 Define basic terms in STATISTICS and PROBABILITY

 Calculate the probability on an event
 Define SAMPLE SPACE, VARIABLE and RANDOM VARIABLE
INTRODUCTION TO PROBABILITY

 In Mathematics, the act of rolling a die, tossing a coin, getting a card from a deck
of cards and etc is known as an EXPERIMENT.
 The result of the experiment will result in one of a number of OUTCOMES. For
example, when tossing a coin we could obtain a _____________________.
 An EVENT is when we obtain a particular value, for example a Head.
LET’S TRY TO GIVE OUTCOMES from the
experiments below”

 When tossing a coin, the possible outcomes are: _________________________

 When rolling a die, the possible outcomes are:___________________________
 The month you were born in can be:_________________________________
 A baby can be: __________________
 In getting a card from a deck of cards, the possible outcomes
are:______________________________
EVENTS

 An event is when you carry out the experiment and obtain a value.
 A wanted result.

For example,
When tossing a coin, an event my be:

When rolling a die, an event might be:

PROBABILITY

 A probability is a measurement of how likely an event is likely to occur.

 We can calculate probability of an event happening using the following formula:

 For example, the probability of obtaining a 3 when rolling a die is:

Let’s calculate the Probability!

 Getting a head when tossing a coin.

 Getting an odd number in rolling a die.

 Choosing a ‘B’ from the word PROBABILITY.

PRACTICE EXERCISE. Determine the Probability in each
Experiment.

 Probability of getting a TAIL in tossing a coin.

 Probability of getting an even number in rolling a die.
 Probability of getting a HEART in a deck of cards.
 Probability of getting a JACK in a deck of cards.
 Probability of getting an ACE in a deck of cards.
 Probability of getting a zero in rolling a die.
 Probability of getting a number less than 5 in rolling a die.
 Probability of not getting a 6 in rolling a die.
SEATWORK 3. Determine the Probability in each Experiment.

 You roll a die, What is the probability of getting a prime number?

 You roll a die. What is the probability that 2 will not appear on the die?
 A bowl contains 2 green, 10 blue, and 8 red stones. If a stone is chosen,
what is the probability of getting a green?
 A bowl contains 2 green, 10 blue, and 8 red stones. If a stone is chosen,
what is the probability of NOT getting a green?
 A single card is chosen at random from a standard deck of 52 cards.
What is the probability of choosing a card that is not a diamond?
