Objectives
• An industry visit is an educational opportunity
for students, professionals, and other
individuals to visit a company or organisation
and learn about its operations, products,
services, and culture. Industry visits are
usually organised by educational institutions,
training programs, or professional
associations to provide us with real world
exposure to various businesses.

Company Profile

D. G. Cold Storage Private Limited is a private incorporated on 24th January 2001. It is


classified as non government company and is registered at registrar of companies
Kolkata. It is involved in freezing and storing of potatoes. Directors of DG called storage
private limited are Sampa Bose Trivedi and Rahul Chakraborty. It has a total area of
7.36 acre. It has 3chambers, 5 floors in each chamber and 6 lifts to carry the potato
bags up to 5th floor. It has a total capacity of 450,000 packets where as each packet
hold 50 kg potatoes.
Core functions of the industry
• Harvest: In India Harvesting of potatoes are usually done at the end of February ,in
a substantial amount. India is the 2nd largest producer of potato in the world.
• Weight: Farmers or traders post harvesting pack their potatoes in wide-meshed
bags/perforrated plastic bags . Each bag weights 50 kg.
• Transport: Potato Sacks each weighing 50 kg are then loaded in tractors, motor
vans and trucks and transported to nearby cold storages.
• Bonds: In the potato cold storage the potato socks are carried to a wide open clean
space inside the cold storage premises called ‘Shade’ where the farmers or traders
are provided with bonds or challan to safeguard their potato sacks inside the coal
storage chambers.
• Conveyor belt: A cool storage chamber usually has five floors. From the shade cold
storage labourerss carry these bagged potato sacks to the conveyor belt. Conveyor
belt moves the 50 kg sacks to their destination floor one by one by one.

Chamber loading: From the conveyor belt the
laborers again carry these sacks over their
heads inside the pre cooled(at 35 degrees
Fahrenheit )storage chambers and arrange
them in bamboo racks or shelf accordingly to
their bond numbers.

Chamber Maintenance: Cold storage chambers


are equipped with the equipments to control the
temperature, relative humidity, and air circulation
to maintain the best storage conditions. This
means the potato produce not only appears fresh
from the outside but is also healthy from the
inside.
Unloading
• Unloading period: Unloading
or depleting of stored potatoes
begins from may until the end
of the storage season usually
November.

• Bonds and unloading: Farmers


or traders interested in depleting
the stored potatoes reaches the
store premises which there
bonds. Cold storage sardars after
scrutinizing their bond numbers
fetches their potato sacks and
brings them to the shade.

• Drying: a shade contains around 30-35 ceiling fans. In the presence of the farmers
or traders, their potatoes are taken out of the sacks and are laid down on the floor
under the fans for drying.

• Sorting: Sorting of potatoes refer to removal of rotten, diseased infected and cut
potatoes. After drying, sorting or done in the shade.
• Grading: Grading of potatoes refer to categorization of potatoes based on their
variety, size and shape.
After drying and sorting grading are also done in the shade. Then there good looking,
fresh, healthy potatoes and again packed into 50 kg sacks are transported to retailers.
All ready for our consumption.

• Daily check the ammonia gas leakage in the control room as it is very harmful in
human breathing.
• To keep a check that potatoes are not coloured.
• To keep an eye on the weights of potatoes doing unloading . So that is no shortage in
the weights.
• Diseased potatoes are to be thrown away.

• Taxes are to be paid regularly.
• Date of opening & closing of cold
storages should be maintained.
• Routine pollution check should be done.
• Ethical business decision making.
