Relations with China (1947-99)

1st phase:
• 1947: Civil war in China. Pak took little interest
• 1949: communists rebels won in china and Pak
was bit late to accept.
• 1950: border dispute with china but no clash
• 1950’s: anti communist pacts signed by Pakistan
(SEATO, CENTO)
Relations were cold with China at the beginning!
Relations with China (1947-99)

• 2nd phase:
• 1962: India-China War. Common enemy India
• 1963: huge economic and military support from
China, PIA started international operations
• 1960’s : largest purchaser of cotton
• 1964: Pakistan resolved border dispute
• 1965: Firm diplomatic support from China
Pakistan supported communist China in UNO in
spite of US support to Taiwan!
Relations with China (1947-99)

• 2nd phase:
• 1972: China converted its loans to grants after
3rd Indo-Pak war 1971
• 1970’s: korakaram Highway
• 1980’s : Nuclear support treaty
• 1990’s: Military, diplomatic, economic support
Pakistan and China never saw back since 1960’s
and proven a great example of freindship!
Pak-Bangladesh relations (1972-99)

• 1st phase:

• 1972: Both were reluctant to start relations


• 1972: Pakistan left common wealth as it
accepted Bangladesh immediately.
• Issue of division of asseets
• Issue of Refugees
Pak-Bangladesh relations (1972-99)

• 2nd phase:

• 1974: Mujeeb ur Rehman visited Pakistan, also


the same year Z A Bhutto visited Bangladesh
• 1980’s: both countries agreed to improve
relations in trade, tourism and media, Pak
helped Bangladesh during severe flood crises
• 1990’s: Formal and bilateral relations
Pak-Iran relations (1947-99)

• 1st phase:

• 1947: Iran was amongst the 1st to accept Pak


• 1950’s: members of Baghdad Pact(CENTO)
• 1960’S: RCD, helped Pak during war with India
• 1973: Iran sent troops to overcome uprising in
PAK.

• 2nd phase:

• 1979: Islamic revolution in Iran


• Relations were declined as
 Enthusiasm of Pak towards previous Govt.
 Opposite foreign policy in Afghan war.
 Neutral stance of Pak during 10 years of Iran-
Iraq war
• Formal relations are maintained ….
