SURVEYING AND HOW IT AFFECTS

PROJECT PERFORMANCE.

EDEH CHIKAMMA DESTINY

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
The construction industry has recently witnessed a paradigm shift from traditional
paper-based method of service delivery to electronic information exchange using
Information Technology (IT), at least in the western world like UK. It is now evident
that the adoption of Information Technology can enhance construction productivity
and improve communications for effective decision-making and coordination among
construction participants. The ability of the industry to avail itself of technology
depends on the level of usage by construction participants including the Quantity
Surveyor (QS) who plays a major role in the management of project success
determinants, such as cost, time and quality. The construction industry is a dynamic
and ever-evolving landscape, constantly adapting to advancements in technology.
Quantity surveying (QS), a crucial profession within this sector, plays a vital role in
managing project costs, ensuring accuracy, and maximizing value throughout the
construction lifecycle (Aune and Iveland, 2020). However, the traditional practices
employed in QS are increasingly challenged by the rapid integration of technology
into various aspects of construction workflow.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

It is a known fact that advancement in technology and evolution of information

technology as dramatically change the way business is conducted by various
professionals. It has reduced the cost of services, reduces labour and saves time.

In view of this Pamulu & Buta (2004) reported that technological advancement can no
longer be viewed as an enhancement of traditional business procedures but rather as
an innovation agent that enables new and different alternatives to operation of
business organization.
According to Ibironke et al (2011), technological advancement has made the
construction industry to recently witness a paradigm shift from traditional paper-based
method of delivery to electronic information exchange using information technology
(IT), atleast in the western world like UK. It is therefore evident that adoption of IT
can enhance construction productivity and improve communications for effective
decision-making and coordination among construction participants.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM CON’T

In addition most of the Nigerian researches (Oyediran & Odusami, 2005; Oladapo,
2006, Ibironke et al., 2011; Zainon et al.,2016) majorly focused on the impact of
technology in terms of QS software on project performance. The use of technological
advancement with respect to software that will bring all built environment
professionals together is still lax in the Nigeria literature. The efforts made in this
direction are mostly from foreign researchers. This leaves a gap that this study
attempted to fill by evaluating the effect of Technology in the field of Quantity
Surveying and how it affects project performance in Nigeria with major emphasis on
the use of Quantity Surveying and other built environment ICT software in order to
achieve the aim.
1.3 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
 What is the effect of technology in the field of quantity surveying?
 How does technology affects project performance in the field of quantity
surveying?
 What are the factors limiting the use of technology in the field of quantity
surveying?
AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
Aim
The aim of this research is to Evaluate The Effect of Technology In the Field of
Quantity Surveying and how it affects project performance.

Objectives
The following are the objectives of this study:
 To examine the effect of technology in the field of quantity surveying.
 To examine how technology affects Project Performance in the field of quantity
surveying.
 To examine the factors limiting the use of technology in the field of quantity
surveying
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The few large firms (mostly foreign), which constitute just about 5 percent of the total
number of contractors in the formal sector, control about 95% of the construction
market, giving the small firms just about 5 percent share of the market. The results of
this study will impact the Nigerian construction industry in the following ways;
 Delineate the ICT application areas and the level of adoption.
 Highlight the benefits of ICT application in construction at the strategic, tactical
and operational levels.
 Serve as a guide to construction organizations in the area of the cost of ICT
adoption (both direct and indirect cost); and the risks involved.

Research and development.

 The outcome of this study will educate the stakeholders in the quantity surveying
profession on the effect of technology in the field of quantity surveying with
particular focus on how it affects project performance.
 This research will be a contribution to the body of literature in the area of the effect
of personality trait on student’s academic performance, thereby constituting the
empirical literature for future research in the subject area.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
There are other professionals in the construction industry that uses different
technology for their different daily tasks such as architect and other service and
structural engineers but this research seek to focus on the Effect of technology in the
field of quantity surveying and how it affects project performance.
This research work shall cover Contracting and Consulting Quantity Surveyors in
Kaduna
