Rey Complex Figure Test and
Recognition Trial
2024
History of the • Andre Rey developed first complex figure to
differentiate brain dysfunction from traumatic brain
Test injury.
• Paul Osterrieth standardized Rey's administration
procedure and provided the initial normative data based
on neuropsychology.
• The test is often referred to as the Rey-Osterrieth
Complex Figure Test.
• One of the most commonly used tests in the field,
ranking top 10 used by neuropsychologists.
• "Permits assessment of a variety of cognitive processes,
including planning, organizational skills, and problem-
solving.
Rey Complex Figure Test and Recognition Trial 2
2024
Purpose of the Test
Purpose: Purpose:
Assess constructional , organizational and motor skills: Provide insight into multiple cognitive areas
Visuospatial constructional ability Attention and concentration
Visual memory ( short-and log term-memory function) Planning and organizing
Perceptual organization and planning (executive Non verbal memory(difficult to encode verbally)
function)
Fine-motor coordination
Used with children to study cognitive development.
Use caution when interpreting ages 80-93.
Rey Complex Figure Test and Recognition Trial 3
Rationale
Visual drawing memory tests are mostly unaffected by language ,culture and education
Abstract figure so it eliminates semantic knowledge
Ability to recall is influenced by the order a figure is organized when we constructing
Ideal approach- see big picture , draw external features first ( global processing )
Not ideal – see internal features first ( local processing )
In sights offer by the original design
Precise copy under 3 minutes- normal processing
Accurate copy but slow – possible issues with perception or executive functipns
Poor copy and very slow – mental disability or dementia
Age range 6 – 93 yrs
Presentation Title 4
Application
Clinically and in research across a wide range of ages ( 6 – 93 yrs)
In conjunction with other tests rey complex test can detect
Neurological disease
Alzheimer's ,Various dementias ,Parkinsons ,Traumatic brain injury , Brain tumors.
Psychological/psychiatric diseases
ADHD
Eating disorders
Schizophrenia
Executive and cognitive functioning.

SCORING THE RECOGNITION TRIAL
• Recognizes an element that
is part of the RCF
A true positive
• Targeted Items 2 , 5 , 7 , 8 ,9
response
,12 ,13 ,15 , 19 , 20 , 22 and
24
• Recognizes the element that
is not part of RCF
A false positive
• 1 , 3 , 4 , 6 , 10 , 11 , 14 ,
response
16 , 17 , 18 , 21 and 23
SCORING THE RECOGNITION
TRIAL
Sum the circled numbers and enter this value as
raw score for recognition true positive
Do it same for recognition false positive
A True Negative Response
on the Recognition trial occurs when a
respondent indicates that he or she does
not recognize an item that is not part of the
figure (i.e., does not circle a distractor item)
The Recognition True Negatives
Raw Score is the inverse of the Recognition
False Positives raw score. Therefore, subtract the
Recognition False Positives raw score from 12, and
record this value as the raw score for Recognition
True Negatives
A false negative response on the Recognition
trial occurs when a respondent indicates that he or
she does not recognize an item that is part of the
figure.
The Recognition False Negatives raw
score is the inverse of the Recognition True
Positives raw score. Therefore, subtract the
Recognition True Positives raw score from 12, and
record this value as the raw score for Recognition
False Negatives.
The Recognition Total Correct raw score is the
sum of the Recognition True Positives and
Recognition True Negatives raw scores. Sum these
two scores and record this value as the
Recognition Total Correct raw score.
