PROBLEM SOLVING

IN MATHEMATICS
1. DEFINITION OF PROBLEM SOLVING

• Problem solving in mathematics involves the

ability to understand problem, devise a plan, carry
out the plan, and evaluate the solution. It’s a
process that requires creativity, logical reasoning,
and application of mathematical knowledge.
2. IMPORTANCE IN THE MATHEMATICS
EDUCATION
•Critical Thinking- Problem-solving
activities promote critical thinking skills,
helping students approach challenges in
a systematic and logical manner.
• Transferable Skills- Problem-solving skills
learned in mathematics are transferable to various
areas of life, encouraging a problem-solving
mindset beyond the classroom.
• Real-world Application- Connecting
mathematical concepts to real-world problems
enhances the relevance of math education.
3. PROBLEM SOLVING STRATEGIES
• Polly's Problem-Solving Framework-
George Polya’s four-step problem-solving
method involves understanding the problem,
devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and
looking back to evaluate solution.
• Model Drawing- A visual approach where
students use diagram or models to represent and
solve mathematical problem.
• Trial and Error- Encourages students to
experiment with different approaches until they
find a solution.
• Collaboration- Group problem-solving activities
promote collaboration and the exchange of ideas.
4. CHALLENGES IN PROBLEM SOLVING
• Fear of Making Mistakes- Some students
maybe hesitant to engage in problem solving due
to fear of making errors. Creating a supportive
environment is crucial.
• Limited Exposure- Lack of exposure to diverse
problem types can hinder the students ability to
apply mathematical concepts to different
situations.
