INTRODUCTION
Mission • Play in g with dice is an age old game. We all love to play with it
too.
• Play in g with dice needs us to p ick u p a d ice and make sure that it
is u nbiased.
• Mak in g a b lo ck as a dice and cutting it clearly to make sure that
it is u nbiased is all an o ld story.
• The dice b ecomes b iased if th e sh ape is no t cut well.

• Now, we are g oing to show you an electron ic LED d ice which is Vision
nearly un biased. Th ere is n o chance to cheat as the circu it operates
at su ch a h ig h speed that the circuit is almost imp ercep tib le to th e
hu man eye.
• There is also little main ten ance and there is hardly an y impact on
agin g o f the circuit.
• The freq uency may v ary a bit with chang e in po wer sup ply voltage,
agin g o f the activ e an d passive compo nents but still the
rand omness will b e p reserv ed witho ut an y trou ble.

L EDs X 6
555 Timer IC
• CD4017 Decade Counter IC
• Resistors – 2.2KΩ, 100KΩ X 2
• Capacitors – 1nF and 0.1µF
• P ush Button
• 9V Battery
• Breadboard
• Connecting Wires
OPERATION OF
UNBIASED ELECTRONIC
DICE WITH LEDS
• This ci rcuit uses 555 t imer as an astable multivibrator. In
th is mo de, t he circuit is arranged with R2 = 100 KΩ, R3 =
100 KΩ an d C2 = 0.1 µF.
• Wit h thi s configuration , the ci rcuit operates as a pulse
generator wit h a frequ ency in ord er of kilo hertz. This
means that t he circuit pro duces a clock cycle of about
0.000 210 seconds whi ch i s imperceptible to the human eye.
• We cannot observe t he v al ues whi ch change at that faster
rat e s o there is hardl y an y poss ibil ity of getting the dice
bi ased.
OPERATION OF
UNBIASED ELECTRONIC
DICE WITH LEDS
• The cl ock p ulses are gi ven to a cou nter cum decoder
circui t IC 401 7 with the sevent h out put g iven to reset. It
has ni ne po ssi ble outpu ts ou t of wh ich, the seventh is
gi ven t o res et b ecau se we only need a count up to 6 as a
di ce has six faces on ly.
• The fi rs t si x outp uts are gi ven respectively to the LEDs, so
th at t he respective LED wil l gl ow for th e corresponding
count.

• I f th e c o u n t is 1 , L E D -1 w ill g lo w. If th e c o u n t if 2 ,
L E D -2 will g lo w a n d so o n u n til th e six th c o u n t.
• Wh e n th e c o u n t is six , th e six th L E D will g lo w a n d
